Microsoft's hidden Windows 11 trick makes apps launch 70% faster. I tested it on a low-end PC, and early results are promising. Right now, when you click Start, open File Explorer, launch Edge, or right-click for a context menu, and there’s often that tiny micro-stutter before anything happens. Microsoft is now testing a feature called Low Latency Profile. Once turned on, and you do a high-priority action, Windows 11 briefly pushes the CPU to max frequency for 1–3 seconds, finishes the task faster, then drops back down. In my testing on a constrained VM with just 2 cores and 4GB RAM, the difference was obvious. Edge, Outlook, Copilot, and the Start menu opened much faster. CPU usage spiked to around 96–97%, but only for a few seconds. For high-end PCs, the difference may be small. But for budget laptops and low-end Windows 11 machines, this could be a real game-changer.

I bet you've never noticed this ultra-cool but rather complicated "cone of prediction" at the center of Windows context menus? It allows the system to predict that you're aiming for a flyout. Well, that's because Windows (at least in the old days) didn't do any such fanciness. It just uses a timeout of 400ms, and it's always worked pretty well. It's even adjustable (SPI_SETMENUSHOWDELAY) these days, but used to just be 80% of your double-click speed setting. So the faster your reflexes were - per that setting, at least - the shorter your menu flyout allowance. No cone needed. ( I stole this from a Raymond Chen hockey card that I keep tucked up in my 50 Mission Cap ).

If I ignore the notification, open Outlook manually, find the email myself, and click it, I can finish faster than the notification flow. It's all because Outlook for Windows is literally Microsoft Edge running Outlook .com in a browser window. New Outlook runs through WebView2 with around 10 separate processes: GPU process, service worker, utility processes, manager, and more. It uses roughly 490MB to 636MB RAM while idle, compared to Outlook Classic sitting around 117MB to 148MB. CPU usage is also worse: around 4% idle on new Outlook versus under 1% on Classic in my testing. Microsoft shut down Mail and Calendar, keeps pushing enterprises toward this web wrapper, and still wants people to believe it is the future of email on Windows. SHAME!

I've been testing out Windows 11's new Haptic Signals feature on compatible hardware, and I think I love it. I'm someone who yearns for small UX details like this, and I'm so happy to see Microsoft leaning into subtle but quality UX implementations like haptics across the Windows Shell. These new Haptic Signals provide a subtle bump when interacting with certain UI elements and actions, such as snapping app windows or dragging files in File Explorer. The feedback response feels great and intentional, and makes using the OS feel more satisfying. There's still room for improvement, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed with this first implementation. It's only supported on a handful of devices for now, but that should change over time. I've always loved the haptic feedback layered throughout Google Pixel phones, and now Windows is getting its own version of it. More UX niceties like this, please!

Claude Mobile starts the idea... Ghostty finishes it I basically use Claude Mobile as a notepad now. Whenever something comes to mind, I open the app, pick a repo, and ask Claude to start exploring. Then I just let it run while I go on with my day. Later I jump into Claude Desktop and I’m right back in the same session, with context, structure, and a clearer shape of the idea. I tweak a few things to set up the coding phase. Finally, one click to Ghostty (video), open a couple of worktrees, and start working on the PR. IMPORTANT: when you move to Ghostty, it must be the exact same repo you started on mobile, otherwise the --teleport command will fail

Microsoft presents Windows Agent Arena Evaluating Multi-Modal OS Agents at Scale discuss: Large language models (LLMs) show remarkable potential to act as computer agents, enhancing human productivity and software accessibility in multi-modal tasks that require planning and reasoning. However, measuring agent performance in realistic environments remains a challenge since: (i) most benchmarks are limited to specific modalities or domains (e.g. text-only, web navigation, Q&A, coding) and (ii) full benchmark evaluations are slow (on order of magnitude of days) given the multi-step sequential nature of tasks. To address these challenges, we introduce the Windows Agent Arena: a reproducible, general environment focusing exclusively on the Windows operating system (OS) where agents can operate freely within a real Windows OS and use the same wide range of applications, tools, and web browsers available to human users when solving tasks. We adapt the OSWorld framework (Xie et al., 2024) to create 150+ diverse Windows tasks across representative domains that require agent abilities in planning, screen understanding, and tool usage. Our benchmark is scalable and can be seamlessly parallelized in Azure for a full benchmark evaluation in as little as 20 minutes. To demonstrate Windows Agent Arena's capabilities, we also introduce a new multi-modal agent, Navi. Our agent achieves a success rate of 19.5% in the Windows domain, compared to 74.5% performance of an unassisted human. Navi also demonstrates strong performance on another popular web-based benchmark, Mind2Web. We offer extensive quantitative and qualitative analysis of Navi's performance, and provide insights into the opportunities for future research in agent development and data generation using Windows Agent Arena.

Sure, but the idea of simplifying the appearance of Fortnite, the locker and the shop are all going in the exact opposite direction of simplicity. Equipping cosmetics takes double, if not triple the clicks. The UI is impractical and janky, not to mention the introduction of buttons and drop-down menus that were far easier to access previously. Selecting a skin to rotate it, preview it or even spin it around now requires clicking on it, which then applies it to your loadout. Previously this needed a confirm button so you could preview and choose skins, backblings etc without loosing your currently equipped on if you want to go back. Wraps are not included as part of a character's preset despite being completely relevant to the skin worn. Changing emotes, lobby tracks, and all cosmetics now means you have to back out and change tabs, something that could have previously been done on 1 page. The sectioned tabs make sense with new types like LEGO Kits, Cars, Instruments but there's no need to separate Character from Wraps, Emotes or Lobby. Archiving or Favoriting items can no longer be done in batches or quickly. Previously all you had to do was click once per cosmetic on the button but now you have to enter a drop down and select it for every individual item. Applying wraps to all slots now requires a drop down menu rather than simply clicking the button at the bottom. Swinging a pickaxe or redeploying a glider is near impossible to do and feels like more of a chore to actually accomplish with the drop-down menu. It overlays onto other items meaning as soon as it's clicked the menu vanishes and switches to another cosmetic before the animation can even begin. Cosmetics in the locker can be searched by seasons using "S1-17" but after S18+ they no longer filter. Entering the drop-down menu or right-clicking anything in the locker accidentally immediately takes you all the way back to your currently equipped item when exiting. The filter menu requires an "apply" button to be pressed rather than simply closing and applying when selecting one of the filters, taking longer and more clicks to simply find your recent items or remove a filter. The filter menu was also better as a side panel so you don't have to move your cursor to the center of the screen and back every single time. As a side panel it also allowed for more options to be displayed, whereas the current one requires a huge scroll bar to simply filter by favorite. The presets menu scroll wheel also zooms the skins in and out as you scroll up and down the list. Because of the randomize preset button, the list compared to when saving a preset is all moved up by 1, becoming disorientating to where the preset was in relation to the rows. The shop no longer displays item descriptions or set names on cosmetics - now requiring a click on each individual item when there is adequate space to do so. The new shop and locker appearance can be accustomed to, however, it NEEDS the basic functionality and user-friendly UI elements that the previous ones had. Simple buttons at the bottom to favorite, swing, redeploy and equip. Less tabs to switch between, less clicks required to complete simple tasks and less feeling like there's a battle against the UI itself just to equip the cosmetics you paid for. Sure, but the idea of simplifying the appearance of Fortnite, the locker and the shop are all going in the exact opposite direction of simplicity. Equipping cosmetics takes double, if not triple the clicks. The UI is impractical and janky, not to mention the introduction of buttons and drop-down menus that were far easier to access previously. Selecting a skin to rotate it, preview it or even spin it around now requires clicking on it, which then applies it to your loadout. Previously this needed a confirm button so you could preview and choose skins, backblings etc without loosing your currently equipped on if you want to go back. Wraps are not included as part of a character's preset despite being completely relevant to the skin worn. Changing emotes, lobby tracks, and all cosmetics now means you have to back out and change tabs, something that could have previously been done on 1 page. The sectioned tabs make sense with new types like LEGO Kits, Cars, Instruments but there's no need to separate Character from Wraps, Emotes or Lobby. Archiving or Favoriting items can no longer be done in batches or quickly. Previously all you had to do was click once per cosmetic on the button but now you have to enter a drop down and select it for every individual item. Applying wraps to all slots now requires a drop down menu rather than simply clicking the button at the bottom. Swinging a pickaxe or redeploying a glider is near impossible to do and feels like more of a chore to actually accomplish with the drop-down menu. It overlays onto other items meaning as soon as it's clicked the menu vanishes and switches to another cosmetic before the animation can even begin. Cosmetics in the locker can be searched by seasons using "S1-17" but after S18+ they no longer filter. Entering the drop-down menu or right-clicking anything in the locker accidentally immediately takes you all the way back to your currently equipped item when exiting. The filter menu requires an "apply" button to be pressed rather than simply closing and applying when selecting one of the filters, taking longer and more clicks to simply find your recent items or remove a filter. The filter menu was also better as a side panel so you don't have to move your cursor to the center of the screen and back every single time. As a side panel it also allowed for more options to be displayed, whereas the current one requires a huge scroll bar to simply filter by favorite. The presets menu scroll wheel also zooms the skins in and out as you scroll up and down the list. Because of the randomize preset button, the list compared to when saving a preset is all moved up by 1, becoming disorientating to where the preset was in relation to the rows. The shop no longer displays item descriptions or set names on cosmetics - now requiring a click on each individual item when there is adequate space to do so. The new shop and locker appearance can be accustomed to, however, it NEEDS the basic functionality and user-friendly UI elements that the previous ones had. Simple buttons at the bottom to favorite, swing, redeploy and equip. Less tabs to switch between, less clicks required to complete simple tasks and less feeling like there's a battle against the UI itself just to equip the cosmetics you paid for. We just released a new marketing site and I wanted to talk through some of the changes that we made and why. Design thinking is the other side of the feed, it's usually more nuanced than the flashier parts and typically doesn't hold up as well to a quick scroll. Doesn't bode well for this thread! But, this will be my attempt to talk through the changes made and why. First up, this is our new hero. At Loops.so, our goal right now is to be the only platform you need to email your users The H1 matches that intention and the subheader reinforces it. We also wanted it to be clear we ship fast and often, so we added a pill showing the latest featured changelog. Agents are part of how people build software today, so we wanted to give that the second most important placement on the page, right after signup. Finally, the logo strip should not distract too much, but it should still help people understand these are users, not just logos. So we added the date of first payment from Stripe next to each logo. Next up, more things!

This is a wild moment inside the cockpit, just 2 minutes after leaving Florida. At 150,000 feet, the sky was gone from light blue to black, and the ride on the huge, solid rockets has been violent, jamming us up through the air. Suddenly there's a blast of pyrotechnics. Even though we're going Mach 5, the air is so thin the explosion arches out in front of the windows. Now being pushed by just the 3 Shuttle engines, the ride goes smooth, with a huge feeling of relief - getting rid of those solids means you're much safer, and halfway to orbit. I've done it twice. Atlantis and Endeavour. A great start to an amazing adventure.
