Microsoft Windows: "We're preloading File Explorer so it launches faster." File Pilot: Compiles in less than 3 seconds. Launches instantly. Eats whole drive for breakfast. Speed isn't a background task, it's design.

@Windows The fact that others can use Microsoft's APIs better than Microsoft itself is ridiculous

@Windows Haha that's a good way of putting it.

@Windows Just downloaded it and it feels amazing, good work!

@Windows Explorer would load in half a second or less if they didn't lard it up with forced copilot, onedrive integration, edge and bing hooks, and everything else nobody asked for.

@Windows I agree. It launched instantly on my old XP and Win7 machines (which ran much weaker hardware). But MS just doesn't care, and probably doesn't have full control over this anymore.

@Windows For once there is something in the Windows landscape whose name ends with "Pilot" and is actually more useful, reliable and fast 🤷🏻♂️

@Windows I was actually kind of worried that the word Pilot might be confused with Copilot. Hopefully that hasn't been the case for me so far.

@Windows Yea they're milking that cow for far too long now....for once this is something that does work...so more power to them!

@Windows My problem with Win File Explorer is that it’s slow even AFTER I load it. Just scrolling up/down on the directory tree view kills me with how slow it is :\

@Windows Yeah it's unusable with any moderately sized folder.

@Windows Replacing some proprietary closed-source slop with some different closed-source proprietary slightly better slop.

@Windows "slightly better slop" Thanks for the compliment :)

@Windows I love it how you quit the File Explorer at the end xd

@Windows Well, for now at least closing File Explorer is instant. I wonder for how long.

@Windows fastest program i've downloaded, install and enjoyed EVER

@Windows Thank you! 🙇♂️

@vidhvatm @Windows I would love to know how you made file pilot the default file manager. Even the key bidding Win+E still opens file pilot.

@vkrajacic @Windows i just downloaded the file, executed it, checked all the boxes and hit okay without looking at anything. win + e works for me too it's great

@vkrajacic @Windows yeah, I've been trying to make it the default since the first beta came out, i tried so many hacks but non of them worked as good, so i would love to know how he did it.

@vidhvatm @Windows There's a thread on our Discord forums where I pasted which registry entries I modify.

@Windows Mr. Krajacic, I must say, your post makes little sense. As you know, Microsoft is one of the foremost technology companies in the world, and spend billions on HR, ensuring they get the very best people. Surely you can't be suggesting one guy with a C compiler could outdo them?

@Windows I'm not suggesting that. My HR department is awful at the moment and could use improvements.

@Windows Maybe having an awful HR department is the secret?

@Windows

@Windows 200$ for a file explorer? Thank you, MacOs has it for free.

@Windows I had a very noticeable number of people using macOS tell me they want this on macOS, because Finder is awful. And no, macOS is not free, it comes on the most expensive laptop on Earth, from a company that entangles you in their ecosystem.

@AlekseiKaplin @Windows And i have no problems with finder. It may be a bit too arrogant (not a critical feature), but Pivot could borrow some features, like organizing files in a non-grid layout. I find it very convenient to group files I’m currently working on into clusters and love this feature.

@AlekseiKaplin @Windows I'm not sure about this layout per se, but I do have it on my list to experiment with something that resembles a Windows desktop inside FP for any folder the user wants.

@Windows I just downloaded it for the first time and already loving it. The one thing I'm missing (a lot) is a folder tree. I just don't like the folder list approach. Is there any plan for a folder tree to be added?

@Windows Yes, tree view will be added before v1 is released.

@Windows Amazing! There are other questions and/or suggestions I have - is discord the best place for that?

@Windows Yeah, you'll probably find answers to some of your questions there already.

@Windows The beta version crashed for me.

@Windows Can you send the .dmp file to our email or to our Discord server? There are links for both on our download page.

@Windows @vkrajacic when I click on either of the "Generate Full Dump"or "Generate Mini Dump" button nothing happens. Can you tell me the default directory for these dump files?

@Windows Those should appear on the desktop.

@Windows sent on Discord

@Windows Any plans for Unicode support?

@Windows Yes, high on the priority list.

@Windows Great piece of software. - Replaced explorer with File Explorer. - Replaced the start menu with @Stardock's Start11. - Replaced the start search with voidtool's "Everything" on a hotkey. Way to go @Windows .

@Windows No offense, the work is great but Total Commander has achieved this over 20 years ago.😅

@Windows Tell me you didn't watch the video without telling me you didn't watch the video.

@Windows I did watch the video and apart from the pretty UI everything else was solved by Windows Commander (now known as Total Commander) for over 20 years.😅

@Windows FilePilot has an incredibly well-thought and pretty UI. I'm speechless. I wish Windows looked like that. However it's missing the treeview which is a dealbreaker for me. I hope it's coming in the near future?

@Windows It is.

@Windows Keep up the good work. I really love the UI. It's full of subtle touches like the "restore setting" icon. Or the "dim everything else while renaming an item".

@Windows what about a Linux port? happy to help.

@Windows I hope I start working on it next year!

@Windows Any plan to add different sorting option for different folders? Like I want downloads folder to be sorted by date modified but other folders to sort by Name, currently it changes for every folder

@mysticaiman @Windows Yes, you can lock the current folder settings with the lock icon in the header.

@mysticaiman @Windows It would be convenient if it remember settings automatically

That's actually one of the things I hate about FE, it never worked the way I wanted. It would either save views I didn't want, or not save the ones I did want. It was unpredictable. That's why it's manual in FP and you're in total control. Users usually don't need to do that for many folders. The next version will also let you apply it to an entire folder hierarchy.

@Windows Interesting how File Pilot nails instant launches while Microsoft needs preloading crutches. Makes you wonder about Windows 11's design priorities, doesn't it?

@Windows last time i checked file pilot didn't render Persian characters correctly ( it was a long time ago) is it fixed now?

@Windows It's not yet, but hopefully coming for v1.

@Windows can you look into making an email client too since the new outlook can't organize email searches in any logical way and continues to randomly remove mailboxes

@Windows Not sure I'll have time for that in this lifetime :) I've been using Fastmail for a couple of years now. It's not perfect, but it's still fairly good and better than everything else I've tried.

@Windows Dude, do you need any help to do some localization? I would gladly provide the pt_BR one.

@Windows Not at this moment, but I might in the future.

@Windows my man's time has come

@Windows maybe microsoft will buy you for millions of dollars so you can in 30 years say over and over “Welcome to Vjekoslavs banya, I built file explorer”

@Windows First time opening a folder with 1.3mil lidar data files and it took just 2.73 seconds to index! Opening that folder with Explorer still takes like 20 seconds every time and took so long the first time that I thought my computer crashed... This is amazing. 🤘

@Windows As much as I want to hate on Microsoft for this, most of the speed issues are due to 3rd party programs that support document previewing and attach themselves to the file context menu. That's what makes File Explorer slow and buggy as hell.

@Windows That's only part of the reason why file explorer is slow, and loading context menus has actually been the biggest pain point for File Pilot so far. But those aren't excuses for the whole program to be that slow.

I'll pass. I rather take one of the gazillion good file explorers that are free with permanent updates. Even the ones that are known and fast and offer a paid version are like 10€ and have lifetime updates. Limiting updates and making everything a fucking liveservice you have to pay over and over are worse than the slower windoze file explorer.

@Windows I have installed it, looks nice and as good as XYplorer. Good job👍

@Windows I think MS should commit to it, why waste all that down time when the computer is off? Use it to pre-search the hard drive during the night for common words, and then during the day if you search that word it will be instant, like under 30s. /s

@Windows Yeah, I don't need this fancy app. I need Windows to detect my laptop's Wi-Fi, like Ubuntu does.

@Windows Trying to run it but

@Windows Win 10 file explorer gets super slow and unresponsive over the course of a couple hours for me until it crashes, rinse and repeat. I'm gonna try this, thanks

@Windows Thank you 🙏

@Windows *bloat* a result of bad design

@Windows Just downloaded the beta to test it out. Wtf? Are you telling me file explorer could have been like this the entire time? 🫠
