“I was very angry when I heard that Chairman Wontumi had been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Is he the only person involved in illegal mining? Where are the traditional leaders who gave him the land to carry out his operations? His sentence will not end illegal mining in the country, so he should be released.” — A resident of Obuasi reacts to Chairman Wontumi’s 20-year prison sentence at Nsawam Prison over his illegal mining operations at Samreboi.

“What we’re doing is small illegal mining. When you catch workers at a galamsey site, it does not mean they’re the ones influencing the operation. The people sitting at home, particularly land owners are the ones enhancing illegal mining.” — Seemingly educated illegal miner argues, claiming the sole responsibility for the devastation caused by their operations lies with the individuals are capable of procuring lands for such purposes.
