Nine hundred and ninety nine ordinary passenger trains have been withdrawn. These were the cheapest trains on Indian Railways, and the only ones a person could board without a reservation. That is what made them the trains of the worker and the farmer and the student and the patient, because illness and work and examinations rarely give a week of notice. Mail and express trains were added over the same years, so the railway did not shrink. What shrank is the part of it an ordinary family could afford. Total passengers fell from 839.7 crore in 2013-14 to 729.3 crore in 2024-25, which is 110 crore fewer journeys and a fall of 13.2 per cent, in a country whose population grew throughout. Nobody chose a costlier ticket. Their train was taken away. The railway belongs to everyone. Bring back the ordinary passenger trains. Source: CMIE Economic Outlook, reports 21534 and 21522, actuals to March 2025.

First time in Indian Railways: 2 Vande Bharat services have been officially discontinued due to low occupancy. In a first for Indian Railways, the Udaipur-Agra Cantt and Udaipur-Jaipur Vande Bharat trains have been withdrawn due to poor patronage. The same rake will now be redeployed as the Udaipur-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat, which is expected to be flagged off soon. I feel this is a great step to utilise resources efficiently. Vande Bharat trains that are running with low occupancy should be discontinued, and the rakes should be tested on alternate routes. What’s your take? #IndianRailways
