Denzel and I did American Gangster together, and Denzel wouldn’t look at me. I did this scene with Denzel, and he had reworked the scene. Jon Bernthal reveals the hilarious way comic book stores treated him after he was cast as the Punisher. “I went to a comic book store in Ventura, and there’s a guy smoking a cigarette outside. I said, ‘Yeah, man, I’m just looking for some Punisher comics.’ He goes, ‘Yeah, we don’t have much since the announcement.’ I’m like, ‘Announcement?’ I’m thinking, ‘That’s me. That’s my announcement.’ I thought, ‘Do I be a total douche and go over to the guy and be like, “Yeah, actually, I’m the guy?”’ So I just said, ‘Hey, man, if you could…’ And then he looked up and said, ‘Wow, it’s you.’ He was so cool and helpful. He told me, ‘You need to read this, this and this,’ and gave them to me for free. Then I went to New York and into a comic book store in Brooklyn. I got a whole stack and went up to buy them. He looks at me and goes, ‘Yeah, I know who you are.’ I said, ‘Okay, cool, man. I just want to buy these comics.’ He goes, ‘No, you don’t. You’re not taking this, you’re not taking this. You need to read this, this, this and this.’ I was like, ‘Okay, dude.’ And he goes, ‘Do not mess this up.’ Got it. Conan: “Did you get it for free?” Jon Bernthal: “No, man. No, not at all.”
