🦚: I was practicing dancing, which is normal since I’m a singer, but honestly… I’ve put in so much effort into taking care of myself that I ended up exhausted before coming out to see you all. Because some ELF said: “Oppa, we don’t care about anything else, we just love your face,” I found that really sweet. So instead of thinking about what fans might like, I told myself: “At least, let’s avoid what they don’t like.” I found out that they don’t like long hair. Personally, I like long hair because I’m too lazy to go to the barber, and I like tying it up because it’s comfortable. But since they don’t like it, I decided to cut it. As for signs of aging… those are all excuses. Look at Yesung, who is one year younger than me, or Leeteuk, who is the same age as me—both of them look so handsome and fit. Even though our body types and eating habits are different, there is still a basic level of care I can do. So I decided to do my best; I started working out even though I really hate exercise. But since we’re celebrating our 20th anniversary, I felt I should appear in a decent way in front of the fans who have waited so long, as if I’m asking for their forgiveness through this effort. I’m going to be honest. It’s been really hard on me. I’m unapologetically black in a predominantly white space and I face battles that no one else has to deal with. Culturally I’m different from literally every other person in this space so I feel completely misunderstood at times. People create fake accounts to harass me, I’ve been called the N word more times than I ever have in my life, people who I don’t even know go on podcasts and make up lies about me being a “runner”. Some people even found my mom’s number on the internet and called her house trying to get to me. Even when I’m winning it feels like every single bet or analysis is life or death. I don’t feel like I’m given the grace that other people may get who look different from me. I love what I do but I don’t deserve to be treated the way I’m treated by people especially for how much I’ve given to this space. I also don’t take kindly to being constantly called a DEI hire with all the things I’ve accomplished either. I probably don’t handle it the best. Ivy League degree aside, deep down I’m still a black kid from South West Philly and when I feel attacked, I revert back to the version of me that had to survive growing up. I try not to engage as much and ignore the noise but I’m not perfect. I’m still growing and still trying to become the best version of myself.

“He’s not taking it seriously” - tell that to the (much bigger) version of myself that I was a year ago. Listen; I’m just trying to be real. I’m not trying to make excuses, even if I have. This past month was hard for me, especially sharing it the way that I did. But regardless of that I’m not gonna let that low point or anyone on the internet take away from the progress that I’ve made over the YEARS of struggling and learning that I’ve gone through. I will never give up on this journey, I still plan to hit 399 by the end of April; I have a plan, I have a schedule, and I’m going to do my best to follow it. I apologize if this feels like giving attention directly to the negativity, but I felt like these thoughts / this response and the *hope* that I feel right now regarding my journey really need to be shared. I’m PROUD of what I’ve accomplished, even knowing I still have a long ways to go. I see the positive, I promise, and I’m sorry that I can’t always take the time to respond to more messages. #weightlossjourney

I’m going to share this video with my story. I have a VISCERAL reaction when I read takes like this. I have a full time job in an upper-middle class position. I loved my life. I traveled frequently, enjoyed life with my dog and my adult children, I voted in every election, volunteered when I could, and generally benefited from a functioning democracy. I’ve told this story before, but it was literally one conversation with the man who currently represents my district that changed everything for me. Never in a million years did I expect to enter the world of politics. I actually hate the attention. Social media sucks. I’m here because as a grassroots first time candidate, I have to make noise where I can. I’m going to win my election because I am fighting for my hometown, but if for some reason I don’t, I will ABSOLUTELY, happily, retreat back to a grassroots life of background activism where I don’t get called a c**t multiple times a day. This is my 2024 wrap up video. My 2025 video is a slideshow of shaking hands, smiling at events, knocking doors, and living 24/7 to save my community. This is what I gave up. And I have ZERO regrets.
