Gandalf and Pippin’s entrance into Minas Tirith looks so realistic and stunning for one simple reason: it wasn’t CGI at all. 🏰 The Minas Tirith (The White City) seen in the wide approach shots of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was a real, 7-meter-tall physical miniature built by Weta Workshop one of their legendary “big-atures” crafted with incredible precision and detail. Close-up shots at the gate were filmed on full-scale sets, with only minor digital enhancements added later. It feels real because it is real. Minas Tirith wasn’t a digital creation it was handcrafted movie magic.
