Ummm not always true. Older Americans didn't get a social security number until they started working. And they used the state you were living in. I was not born in the state that I started my working life but my ssn reflects where i started working not where i was born .

My first 3 digits come from California, but I was born in Illinois. Not true.

@etcher10 Sorry. But first 3 digits isn’t the state you were born in. It’s the state you were living in when you applied for your SS card. Back in the day, you didn’t get a card till you were old enough to work. Just FYI

That's incorrect. It shows from which state you applied for your Social Security Number, not necessarily where you were born.

Nope. The first three numbers tell where you lived when you applied for your social security number. Where you were born and where you got your SS number are not necessarily the same.

It doesn't indicate where you were born but the area where you applied for your card. They are not always the same place.

The first 3 of Obamas says he was born in Connecticut, not Hawaii. It was also not issued to him until he was a teenager. Just sayin' 🤷

Nope. Tells where I got my first job at 14. I needed a social security number to work. Where I were born had nothing to do with it. Now it might because babies get social security numbers when their birth is registered I believe

Nope. Because back in my day 😉 we didn’t get Social Security numbers until we wanted to get a job. So you got the Social Security number from the state where you currently lived. Not necessarily the state where you were born.

Nope, mine does NOT check out.....oddly it does sync up with the state I lived most of my life in but NOT the state I was born in.

Demonstrably false. Dude has no idea how SS numbers are issued and used. The police are not running your social to validate where you were born. And pretty funny that he used a police stop as the example. Telling, no?😆

I was born in Texas in a military hospital to an active military member, but my SS# reflects the state my father was born in because he used that as his legal home address.

Not necessarily where you were born, just what state your parents were in when they applied for the SS documents

This isn't correct. The first three digits of your SSN say where you first applied for an SSN. Now SSNs are applied for at birth. I got my SSN issued when I was 15. I was born in Chicago but my SSN was applied for in St Louis. The bullet point is your SSN MAY tell where you were born. It also may not.

Sometimes, and sometimes not. The number reflects the office that registered you. For most new borns, that's local. On the other hand I recall reading that a guy named Barrack - born in Hawaii [?] - has a New England issued Social.

This information has been out there since the SS# started being issued. It was never a secret. Answer me this -> Why do people today know so very little about anything in their own country?🤔

Joshua 的头像

Actually that is not exactly true. It's the state that you registered for one. I am from Alabama but have a Florida one.

Not the state I was born in, but probably the state the family lived in when we moved at 3 years old. Probably when parents applied for the SS. Old fart here....lol

Actually, the first three indicate where you applied for an got your Social Security card. For example, my first three digit show that I got it in Indiana, while I was born in Arizona.

Geographic location was a thing before 2011. After that is random number. Also, it's the place of residence at the time the card is issued, not place of birth.

You received your SSN in your birth state. I did not. Prior to the 1980s SSNs were not issued at birth. The first three numbers identify the state in which the SSN was assigned. I received mine at age 14 on the West coast but I was born in New England.

Barry O'bomba's doesn't check out. His SSN shows Connecticut. His mother or father never set foot in that state.

False…It is where your parents applied for your SS#. I was born in Indiana but my Mom didn’t apply for my SS# until I was 5 years old and we lived in Missouri. My first 3 are 493. Also, my brother and sister have the same SS# as me except the last number. They were 3 and 7 yrs old

Actually the first three are indicating where you applied for the SSN, not where you were born.

BleedNRed 的头像

This isn't necessarily true for those born prior to 1987. Social security cards were not issued at birth; they were issued when requested. Therefore, if you lived in a state other than your birth state, you will have a different prefix than your birth state prefix.

For older Americans we didn’t get our social security number at birth. I was born in South Carolina but I received my SSN in Texas.

@Shuff1138 Actually, it just shows where your social security number was applied for at. You could be born in Montana, but if you apply for a social security number in Massachusetts, it will show you as Massachusetts and not Montana.
