Thybulle on Chauncey Billups: "It's another thing to have a coach who is brilliant and proved it, but also has done it as a player. To have the coaches go over the play, but then to have Chauncey grab the ball and then show you how it's supposed to be done, just takes things to another level... That creates this level of accountability where it's like okay, well this-- I don't know how old Chauncey is at this point-- This guy can come in here and do it. We have no excuse."

Thybulle on transitioning to more a leadership role this year: "I couldn't play, so at some point I had to figure out how am I going to stay engaged and then how am I going to create an impact. Also, learning just for myself what are the things I value being a part of this game and a huge part of it is community and feeling like you're a part of something important. My way of creating that for myself was the pour into some of the younger players... We have a group where there's just no ego. The willingness to receive feedback is honestly a huge thing. You've got players who've seen a lot, they know a lot, but if the person you're talking to doesn't want to hear it, there's no value to be exchanged. These guys are extremely receptive."

@ceejaytalksball we just spoke about this. different situation, but regardless this is a skill/trait. many great coaches who do a lot with far less talent. not every team will win chips, but players getting better should be a prerequisite.

Asked Jayson Tatum if he feels like there’s been a turning point with the joy he’s felt on the floor as of late: “Klay [Thompson] told me this after we played them the first time, he’s just like, ‘Man, he’s like one thing he wished he did more, when he first came back was just give himself more grace. Austin Wells being the hitter that he was projected to be would change the Yankees lineup in such a big way. He was a 96th percentile framer last year and 93rd in 2024. (I think framing will still be a part of the game until they get rid of umpires entirely.) Even with getting benched last year because of his bat, he was a 3 WAR player according to Fangraphs in 2025, and had 3.5 in 2024. Now imagine if he could hit. Wells has a career 100 wRC+ — which is good for a catcher in the grand scheme of things, but it just feels like he can do so much more than that. If he juices that number a bit, he's easily one of the more valuable players in the league.

Especially with how the game's changed with the pickoffs and the pitch clock, I think that's one way we can utilize, or at least I can utilize some of my skills a little bit more, getting into scoring position. With the lineup we have, this was probably the best offense in all of baseball last year. If I can find a way to get myself in scoring position, if they're going to walk me or do something, then some good things are going to happen."
