Polish President Proposes Law Equating Bandera Symbols with Nazi and Communist Ones Polish President Karol Nawrocki has announced plans to amend Poland’s Criminal Code and the law on the Institute of National Remembrance, declaring that Bandera-era symbols of the OUN–UPA should be treated the same as Nazi and Communist ones. He made this statement while introducing his own draft law on citizenship. Let me remind you that in 1919 Ukraine, in alliance with Poland, defeated Soviet Russia, saving all of Europe, since Russia had launched a campaign towards Europe. Russia signed a peace treaty, which it violated the very same year by attacking Ukraine again (do you see the value of Russian peace treaties?). However, Poland betrayed Ukraine: by signing an alliance with Russia, Poland and Russia together attacked Ukraine – Russia from the east, and Poland from the west. Thus Poland occupied Lviv, while Russia occupied the rest of Ukraine, forcibly incorporating it into the USSR. Later, Russia divided its ally Poland with Nazi Germany, with whom it also began a war later (note again the “value” of Russia’s allies). Poland then disappeared from the world map as well, paying the price for betrayal and alliance with Russia. Later, both Ukraine and Poland were reborn. Ukraine fought on three fronts: against the Nazis, the Russians, and the Poles. This was logical, because all were occupiers. At that time, the concept of “war crimes” did not exist, and wars were waged by different methods. For example, Poles destroyed entire Ukrainian regions, massacring entire civilian populations. We have countless such tragedies – like the pacification in Eastern Galicia in 1930, when Polish authorities carried out punitive actions against Ukrainians, conducting mass searches in villages, destroying property, beating people, and closing Ukrainian schools and organizations, leading to dozens of deaths and thousands of arrests in the Lviv, Ternopil, and Stanislaviv voivodeships. Or the ethnic cleansings in Chełm and Nadsiannia in 1943–1944, where Polish partisans from the Home Army and Peasant Battalions attacked Ukrainian villages, as in Sahryn, where on March 10, 1944, they surrounded the village, killed 600–800 civilians, including women and children, and burned more than 150 houses. And of course, Operation Vistula in 1947, when Polish communist authorities forcibly deported about 141,000 Ukrainians from western Ukraine (which the USSR had handed over to Poland). Villages were surrounded, people were transported in cattle cars to western regions, 173 people were executed, thousands imprisoned in camps like Jaworzno, where hunger and torture reigned – all with the goal of eliminating support for the UPA and scattering Ukrainians to erase their identity in the Beskids, Nadsiannia, and other ethnic Ukrainian lands. Members of my own family were killed by Poles in these genocides, so these tragedies are not abstract to me. Streets in Poland today bear the names of leaders who carried out these genocides against Ukrainians, and monuments stand in their honor. Ukrainians have one case of revenge in the same manner – Volhynia. But already during World War II, Ukraine and Poland reconciled, and even the UPA and the Home Army fought side by side against Nazi and Russian occupiers. In 2004, Ukraine and Poland mutually apologized to each other. This topic was not raised. Russia tried to manipulate it, since Ukraine and Poland had become almost like brothers (more correctly, sisters, since our countries are feminine nouns), but unsuccessfully. Both Ukrainians and Poles viewed anyone who raised this topic as insane. In 2022 Russia began especially actively trying to pit neighbors against Ukraine. Fake news about refugees was spread, Russian agents in neighboring countries campaigned against “Ukrainization.” With Poland, Russia heavily pushed the topic of the Volhynian tragedy. This was useful for Russia because in Volhynia both Poles killed Ukrainians and Ukrainians killed Poles – it is a painful subject for both nations. Poland and Ukraine agreed not to raise historical issues until the end of the war. But this agreement was broken… Polish politicians, even at the level of Duda, Tusk, and Sikorski, began to regularly raise these topics. They even declared that without resolving these issues, they would block Ukraine’s entry into the EU. Recently, the Polish parliament passed a law to recognize our patriotic and military movements of World War II as criminal, insultingly referring to western Ukraine as “eastern Lesser Poland.” Then came a clear provocation at a concert of a Belarusian singer who had already been boycotted by nationalists in Ukraine even before the war because he is pro-Moscow. Are we to believe that nationalists in Poland came to the concert of a pro-Russian singer? Clearly, it was a staged provocation – but the question remains whether it was staged by Russians or by Poles themselves, since they now try to justify their anti-Ukrainian policy. The newly elected president of Poland continues this policy, but he had already done so before, as he headed the Polish Institute of National Remembrance and integrated Russian fakes into Polish history – copying Russian propaganda about “Ukrainian Nazis,” about blaming only Ukraine, exaggerating the number of victims 5–10 times, and even forgetting that Volhynia is Ukraine (was and is). What were Poles even doing on Ukrainian territory? Why could wartime enemies reconcile, but today’s “allies” themselves provoke conflict? In whose interests is this? Ukraine in alliance with Poland has defeated Russia countless times: for example, during the Time of Troubles in Muscovy 1605–1618, when Polish-Lithuanian forces together with Ukrainian Cossacks under Petro Sahaidachny captured Moscow, occupying the Kremlin in 1610 and forcing the tsar to sign the Truce of Deulino in 1618, ceding lands to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and weakening Muscovite influence; or in the Battle of Konotop in 1659, when Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky, after the Treaty of Hadiach with Poland, crushed a 100,000-strong Muscovite army together with Tatar allies, killing up to 30,000 enemies and forcing Moscow to retreat temporarily from Left-Bank Ukraine; or in the Polish-Russian war of 1660–1667 during the Ruin, when Right-Bank hetmans like Pavlo Teteria, allied with the Poles, won local victories, such as at Chudniv in 1660, where Polish-Cossack forces defeated the Muscovite army, captured its commander, and forced Moscow to sign the Treaty of Chudniv, renouncing claims to Ukraine – although the war ended with the Andrusovo Truce dividing lands; and finally, in the Polish-Ukrainian war against Bolshevik Russia 1919–1921, when the UNR of Symon Petliura under the Warsaw Agreement of 1920, together with Poland under Józef Piłsudski, liberated Kyiv in May 1920 and crushed the Red Army in the Battle of Warsaw that August, the famous “Miracle on the Vistula,” where allied forces destroyed more than 100,000 enemies, saving Europe from a Bolshevik advance and forcing Russia to sign the Treaty of Riga in 1921 – though Poland later betrayed Ukraine, dividing the lands. And whenever we quarreled – we lost independence. So think carefully what you are doing and for what purpose! We can defeat Russia, liberate Belarus, fully eliminate future threats, and live peacefully and develop together. Ukrainian refugees in Poland are not a threat, because Poles themselves go to Germany as migrant workers. Ukraine’s success will be Poland’s success. All economic experts say that all of Ukraine’s neighbors will experience economic growth after Ukraine joins the EU, and the number of refugees will decrease as Ukraine’s economy grows. I don’t understand why you need this conflict? Ukraine is a proud nation and we will not renounce our heroes, just as you do not renounce yours. We understand that this is your history, so we are not outraged when you honor the Home Army and others. Why then are you provoked by the UPA and Bandera, who had nothing to do with these events, since he was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp from the beginning of the war (incidentally, he was imprisoned with Poles and befriended them)? At that time, the concept of “war crimes” did not exist, and wars were waged by different methods. For example, Poles destroyed entire Ukrainian regions, massacring entire civilian populations. We have countless such tragedies – like the pacification in Eastern Galicia in 1930, when Polish authorities carried out punitive actions against Ukrainians, conducting mass searches in villages, destroying property, beating people, and closing Ukrainian schools and organizations, leading to dozens of deaths and thousands of arrests in the Lviv, Ternopil, and Stanislaviv voivodeships. Or the ethnic cleansings in Chełm and Nadsiannia in 1943–1944, where Polish partisans from the Home Army and Peasant Battalions attacked Ukrainian villages, as in Sahryn, where on March 10, 1944, they surrounded the village, killed 600–800 civilians, including women and children, and burned more than 150 houses. And of course, Operation Vistula in 1947, when Polish communist authorities forcibly deported about 141,000 Ukrainians from western Ukraine (which the USSR had handed over to Poland). Villages were surrounded, people were transported in cattle cars to western regions, 173 people were executed, thousands imprisoned in camps like Jaworzno, where hunger and torture reigned – all with the goal of eliminating support for the UPA and scattering Ukrainians to erase their identity in the Beskids, Nadsiannia, and other ethnic Ukrainian lands. Members of my own family were killed by Poles in these genocides, so these tragedies are not abstract to me. Streets in Poland today bear the names of leaders who carried out these genocides against Ukrainians, and monuments stand in their honor. Ukrainians have one case of revenge in the same manner – Volhynia. But already during World War II, Ukraine and Poland reconciled, and even the UPA and the Home Army fought side by side against Nazi and Russian occupiers. In 2004, Ukraine and Poland mutually apologized to each other. This topic was not raised. Russia tried to manipulate it, since Ukraine and Poland had become almost like brothers (more correctly, sisters, since our countries are feminine nouns), but unsuccessfully. Both Ukrainians and Poles viewed anyone who raised this topic as insane. In 2022 Russia began especially actively trying to pit neighbors against Ukraine. Fake news about refugees was spread, Russian agents in neighboring countries campaigned against “Ukrainization.” With Poland, Russia heavily pushed the topic of the Volhynian tragedy. This was useful for Russia because in Volhynia both Poles killed Ukrainians and Ukrainians killed Poles – it is a painful subject for both nations. Poland and Ukraine agreed not to raise historical issues until the end of the war. But this agreement was broken… Polish politicians, even at the level of Duda, Tusk, and Sikorski, began to regularly raise these topics. They even declared that without resolving these issues, they would block Ukraine’s entry into the EU. Recently, the Polish parliament passed a law to recognize our patriotic and military movements of World War II as criminal, insultingly referring to western Ukraine as “eastern Lesser Poland.” Then came a clear provocation at a concert of a Belarusian singer who had already been boycotted by nationalists in Ukraine even before the war because he is pro-Moscow. Are we to believe that nationalists in Poland came to the concert of a pro-Russian singer? Clearly, it was a staged provocation – but the question remains whether it was staged by Russians or by Poles themselves, since they now try to justify their anti-Ukrainian policy. The newly elected president of Poland continues this policy, but he had already done so before, as he headed the Polish Institute of National Remembrance and integrated Russian fakes into Polish history – copying Russian propaganda about “Ukrainian Nazis,” about blaming only Ukraine, exaggerating the number of victims 5–10 times, and even forgetting that Volhynia is Ukraine (was and is). What were Poles even doing on Ukrainian territory? Why could wartime enemies reconcile, but today’s “allies” themselves provoke conflict? In whose interests is this? Ukraine in alliance with Poland has defeated Russia countless times: for example, during the Time of Troubles in Muscovy 1605–1618, when Polish-Lithuanian forces together with Ukrainian Cossacks under Petro Sahaidachny captured Moscow, occupying the Kremlin in 1610 and forcing the tsar to sign the Truce of Deulino in 1618, ceding lands to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and weakening Muscovite influence; or in the Battle of Konotop in 1659, when Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky, after the Treaty of Hadiach with Poland, crushed a 100,000-strong Muscovite army together with Tatar allies, killing up to 30,000 enemies and forcing Moscow to retreat temporarily from Left-Bank Ukraine; or in the Polish-Russian war of 1660–1667 during the Ruin, when Right-Bank hetmans like Pavlo Teteria, allied with the Poles, won local victories, such as at Chudniv in 1660, where Polish-Cossack forces defeated the Muscovite army, captured its commander, and forced Moscow to sign the Treaty of Chudniv, renouncing claims to Ukraine – although the war ended with the Andrusovo Truce dividing lands; and finally, in the Polish-Ukrainian war against Bolshevik Russia 1919–1921, when the UNR of Symon Petliura under the Warsaw Agreement of 1920, together with Poland under Józef Piłsudski, liberated Kyiv in May 1920 and crushed the Red Army in the Battle of Warsaw that August, the famous “Miracle on the Vistula,” where allied forces destroyed more than 100,000 enemies, saving Europe from a Bolshevik advance and forcing Russia to sign the Treaty of Riga in 1921 – though Poland later betrayed Ukraine, dividing the lands. And whenever we quarreled – we lost independence. So think carefully what you are doing and for what purpose! We can defeat Russia, liberate Belarus, fully eliminate future threats, and live peacefully and develop together. Ukrainian refugees in Poland are not a threat, because Poles themselves go to Germany as migrant workers. Ukraine’s success will be Poland’s success. All economic experts say that all of Ukraine’s neighbors will experience economic growth after Ukraine joins the EU, and the number of refugees will decrease as Ukraine’s economy grows. I don’t understand why you need this conflict? Ukraine is a proud nation and we will not renounce our heroes, just as you do not renounce yours. We understand that this is your history, so we are not outraged when you honor the Home Army and others. Why then are you provoked by the UPA and Bandera, who had nothing to do with these events, since he was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp from the beginning of the war (incidentally, he was imprisoned with Poles and befriended them)? And UPA commander Roman Shukhevych promoted friendship and reconciliation with Poles – he strongly criticized the events in Volhynia, and you could know this if you opened historical archives.
