Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid Srinagar Announces Eid-ul-Fitr Prayers at Eidgah at 10:00 AM Urges Authorities Not to Create Hindrance; .Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Reviews Arrangements at Eidgah Srinagar, March 30, 2025: Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid Srinagar has announced that, as per Islamic tradition, the Eid-ul-Fitr congregational prayers will be offered at the historic Eidgah Srinagar at 10:00 AM, inshallah, following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Anjuman informed that the Eid sermon (خطبة عید) will be delivered by Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr. Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq at 9:00 AM. People are requested to reach Eidgah early to benefit from the sermon and participate in the collective prayers. The Auqaf expressed hope that the authorities will not create any interference or obstacles and will facilitate the smooth conduct of Eid prayers at Eidgah, respecting the religious sentiments and rights of the people. It strongly urged that no attempt should be made to disallow the prayers, as witnessed on Shab-e-Qadr and Jumat-ul-Vida, which caused widespread resentment and hurt among the people. It is expected that such actions will not be repeated on this sacred occasion. In preparation, Anjuman Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq visited Eidgah Srinagar to personally review the arrangements and ground conditions. After inspecting the site, he expressed satisfaction that, with the prevailing dry weather, the Eid congregation can be held smoothly. The Anjuman has also urged the J&K Waqf Board to ensure all necessary arrangements for the occasion and appealed to the people to participate in large numbers, maintaining discipline and decorum. Worshippers are requested to bring their own prayer mats. In case of inclement weather, prayer will be offered at Jama Masjid Srinagar.

At Jama Masjid Srinagar Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Welcomes J&K MPs’ United Stand in Parliament, Urges New Delhi to Address “Dil Ki Doori” Through Engagement, War and Force Cannot Resolve Issues Srinagar, 01 August, 2025: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, while addressing the Friday congregation at the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, said: A few days back, in the Parliament of India, there was a debate on the India–Pakistan war after the heinous Pahalgam incident, and different views by different political parties of India with regard to the war, its purpose, success or failure were put forward. Mirwaiz said that very few, and mostly in the opposition, talked of the human aspect of the war and its costs therein, and its correlation to J&K, which reflects the mindset and mood of the times. He said that the three MPs from J&K—Mian Altaf Sahib, Engineer Rashid Sahib, and Agha Ruhullah Sahib—were the only ones to highlight the deep concerns and plight of the people at the epicentre of the basic problem and the current debate. Mirwaiz said they were speaking with passion and pain about the disempowerment and dispossession of the people of J&K and expressing the sentiments of the people of J&K that we have all along been talking about. It is good to see that on these matters all are on the same page. He said that he can only hope that what they said was heard by those in power in New Delhi, and if they really want to lessen “dil ki doori,” they must pay heed to it. Mirwaiz said he has always believed that neither war, nor violence, nor use of force can solve problems and lead to peace and prosperity, which the billions of people in the Indian subcontinent seek, and the swathes of poor in this region deserve. Engagement at all levels, he said, is a far cheaper and evolved alternative.

.Mirwaiz Umar Farooq addresses the Friday congregation at Jama Masjid Srinagar Srinagar, November 14, 2025 : Addressing the Friday congregation at the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Molvi Umar Farooq said that the recent bomb blast in New Delhi in which 12 people going about their daily life lost their live, and scores sustained gruesome injuries is very sad and painful. Such incidents shock and shake up humans. But it is extremely unfortunate that such tragedies are exploited even before facts are established, with the hype and drama created around them by the media with the help of ‘inside sources’, that feeds into a narrative eager to immediately associate it with a particular religion or community, and criminalise them. Due to this our children and youth studying and working in cities and states across India overnight become suspect, fearing for their safety, while it creates anxiety among people here. Mirwaiz said that I, and all the political and religious organisations that I am a part of, have always condemned acts of violence and terror. People of Kashmir are the first to empathise with victims when such incidents occur as they understand the pain caused by such incidents from their own experience of decades. What happened in Delhi, No cause, however right can justify it. No religion can permit it. For me dialogue — talking and listening to each other with respect — is the best way to resolve issues and build bridges . I have also repeatedly said that the pulpit of Jama Masjid places upon me the responsibility of speaking for the people. And the people of Kashmir are distressed and disempowered. While the larger issue remains unaddressed, even the autonomy constitutionally given by the Govt of India to the people of J&K, was snatched in August 2019 when it was downgraded to a Union Territory, and people’s land and job rights taken from them. Immediately their vulnerability and fear of demographic change was real upon them, curtailment of all freedom of expression, constant surveillance, fear of arbitrary dismissals from service and attachment of land and properties, constant raids and arrests by investigative agencies, compounded by daily issues of rising unemployment among the youth and shrinking job avenues due to removal of 35A and a discriminating reservation policy have all together created a situation that has aggravated the sense of hopelessness and resentment. It is my request to the authorities at the helm of affairs and decision making, to seriously relook at their approach of dealing with the people of Jammu and Kashmir only through the prism of security and law and order, and instead as late Vajpayee ji once said from the “dayira of insaniyat and jamhooriyat“. Of course it’s for them to pay heed to it or to ignore . As for us, hoping for the better and faith in Almighty is our imaan.

.Mirwaiz Umar Farooq urges authorities to stop the harassment of Kashmiris across India, safeguard Press freedoms, ensure accountability for the Nowgam blast, and withdraw the anti-people 20% power tariff proposal Srinagar, November 21, 2025: Speaking at the Friday congregation at Jama Masjid today Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Molvi Umar Farooq asked the authorities to ensure that the harassment of Kashmiri’s studying and working in parts of India, after the Delhi blast, is immediately stopped. He said that news of harassment keeps coming in from all over which is very disturbing. Reports have come from Himachal and some other places where Kashmiris have been harassed and in housing colonies Kashmiris are being singled out and questioned simply because of their identity. Mirwaiz said that it is the responsibility of the authorities that targeting of people from Kashmir – which has put their lives in danger – are ensured safety and security. Referring to the raids on Kashmir Times office in Jammu, Mirwaiz lamented that press freedom has become a target of authorities and every dissenting voice from that of the authorities is seen as anti-national and a threat. He added that a free and fair media is essential for democracy and silencing it weakens democratic values. Mirwaiz said that KT has a great legacy of Ved Bhasin ji which the current management is carrying forward and resorting to such tactics is extremely unfortunate and uncalled for. Talking about the Nowgam blast in which more than 9 people lost their lives Mirwaiz said that it is an extremely painful incident that so many precious human lives were lost in this manner. This tragedy could have been averted if seized material had been handled and stored in a responsible manner. It is imperative that those responsible for this preventable loss of life be held to account and the investigation be completed and made public soon. Mirwaiz also highlighted KPDCL’s proposal to impose a 20% surcharge on power tariffs during peak hours. Calling it a grave injustice to people, Mirwaiz said that people are already struggling to survive an economic crisis as businesses are in decline, increasing the power tariff that too before the onset of winters which are harsh in Kashmir is heartless of the Government. Mirwaiz said rather than easing people’s problems, Government is adding to their woes. He added that instead of fulfilling the commitment of providing 200 units of free electricity to the poor, new burdens are being placed on people. He urged the Govt to immediately withdraw this anti-people proposal.

.Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Condemns Torture of Civilians, hopes enquiry will lead to Justice Opposes Waqf Bill Amendments Srinagar, November 22, 2024 - #Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference and head of the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), has strongly condemned the torture of five civilians in Kishtwar who were taken by security forces for questioning. The disturbing images circulating in the media depicting severe torture marks on their bodies have raised significant concerns about human rights violations in the region. Speaking at the Friday congregation at Jama Masjid Srinagar, Mirwaiz expressed deep sorrow over the incident, highlighting the ongoing issue of *impunity and abuse of authority* that has plagued the Kashmir conflict for decades. He emphasized that perpetrators of such acts are rarely held accountable, and he hopes that the inquiry ordered by the authorities will lead to justice for the victims. Furthermore, Mirwaiz addressed another pressing issue regarding a recent directive from a BJP-ruled state mandating that *mutawalis* (caretakers) seek consent from a state-appointed Waqf head before delivering Friday sermons. He described this move as a direct attack on the religious rights and freedoms of the Muslim community, asserting that it exceeds the jurisdiction of any Waqf Board. "This directive exposes the true motives behind the Waqf Amendment Bill introduced by the BJP in Parliament," he stated. "State control over religious rights and affairs is completely unacceptable and will be met with strong opposition from Muslims." The MMU has formally reached out to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), requesting a meeting to present their concerns regarding these amendments. Despite being a Muslim-majority region, their requests for dialogue have yet to materialize. With reports indicating that the Waqf Bill may be presented again in Parliament, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq urged lawmakers to refrain from making hasty decisions that could further infringe upon the rights of the Muslim community. The MMU remains committed to advocating for the rights and freedoms of Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir and will continue to oppose any legislation perceived as an assault on their religious institutions.

I meet you on the first Friday of the year not in Jama Masjid, as the Mirwaiz should, but on social media, as I have once again been put under arrest! As another year begins and we look forward to it, painful memories of 2025 stay with us. It was a year marked by tragedy and uncertainty. The horrific Pahalgam attack shook us deeply. Unequivocally condemned by one and all in the valley, it led to a lot of anxiety among the people as they were targeted and homes demolished. This was followed by another India–Pakistan war, and a stark reminder of how fragile peace in the region continues to be. Despite making unilateral changes in 2019, the reality is that the Kashmir conflict continues to keep the region in an unsettled state that can erupt anytime. That is why wars are paused, not ended, and dialogue finds no takers. The year-end witnessed another tragedy — the massive blast and loss of life in New Delhi. Yet beyond these incidents, in which Kashmiris find themselves at the receiving end of suspicion and attacks in parts of India, not much has changed for them. The trust deficit between them and New Delhi has widened, not shrunk. Enforced silence is projected as acquiescence. Wounds remain open, problems unaddressed, and an elected government of a UT complains of being powerless. A sense of hopelessness prevails, along with an existential crisis of losing one’s identity through demographic change since the state was downgraded to a Union Territory, constitutional guarantees withdrawn, and rules and laws tweaked. The year also witnessed the banning of the Awami Action Committee — a socio-political institution that reached out to people in need, advocating peace, dialogue and resolution — along with Ittihadul Muslimeen, which were part of the Hurriyat Conference. Much of that space has now been extinguished. Today we are operating in an environment where any expression of views contrary to the state, or any disagreement, is increasingly criminalised, branded as “anti-national” and penalised. No public space is available to us, and mediums of communication, including most local media, are not ready to provide any space for voicing expressions of people’s demands or views. I do not have the privilege of addressing press conferences. I cannot move without getting official clearance, and people cannot meet me without seeking permission. My access to the pulpit of Jama Masjid — the spiritual heart of Kashmir — is also curtailed. Even last Friday, I was placed under house arrest, and again this Friday too. In fact, last year I was under house arrest for fourteen Fridays. Arbitrary house arrests have become a recurring feature in my life. All this is deeply suffocating — not only for me, but for an entire society that increasingly feels voiceless. So when pressed to make changes to my social media profile — as Hurriyat constituents are banned under UAPA, displaying the title would be considered illegal and the platforms barred to me — I was left with little choice but to safeguard the minimal channel of communication available to me or face the risk of complete silencing, as even today I am addressing you through this channel when I am again put under house arrest. With Hurriyat constituents banned, all offices sealed and institutions closed, leaders and activists either in jails or under constant surveillance, social media remains the only platform that gives some voice and opportunity to connect with people and the outside world. Let me make it clear, my beliefs and convictions have not changed — not even by a comma. Some have criticised this move as a compromise. To them I say, how and for what? They make a strange argument — for being provided security. But it was provided to me since the day of my father’s martyrdom 35 years ago. If I did not compromise for it since then, why should I compromise now?
