Today, Michigan is 48th in the country in 4th grade reading. Meanwhile Mississippi has gone from one of the worst to one of the best states for literacy because they embraced a phonics based approach. Let’s get back to the basics, quit teaching DEI, and start teaching ABCs again. The future of our kids and our state depends on it!

Black and Latino kids have been left behind by 16 years of one party rule in California, we've got to do better. We must make sure every child can read by third grade, we need phonics in every school, and we need accountability. A grade for every school and a grade for every teacher so we can reward the good ones and remove the bad ones.

I visited Woodley Elementary and met an inspiring principal, dedicated teachers, and committed students. With a 96% attendance rate and rising reading and math scores, they’re proof positive what’s possible when we invest in our kids’ literacy, support our educators, and hold ourselves accountable for progress. Let’s take what’s working in Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana and make it the national standard. Our kids and their parents deserve nothing less.
