Unlike Boston Dynamics' Atlas, which is designed for industrial settings, the Matrix-3 is a general-purpose humanoid robot intended initially for service-oriented environments such as supermarkets, hotels, and office buildings. Standing 1.7 meters tall and weighing 65 kilograms, the adult-sized robot features a full-body covering of biomimetic fabric integrated with tactile sensors, as well as humanoid biomimetic muscles. It employs linear joints rather than the mainstream rotary joints. Matrix claims it is capable of pulling or pushing a load of 200 kg. Optimus makes extensive use of linear joints (linear actuators). It is equipped with dexterous hands offering 27 DOF and boasts a battery life of 4 hours. The robot is powered by a model named WAVE(like an E2E World Action Model) Matrix states that it has already established a manufacturing facility in Shanghai's Zhangjiang with an annual production capacity of 10,000 units. The company plans to deliver 1,000 units this year, with the first batch scheduled for delivery by the end of June. Pricing starts at $99,000. Notably, Matrix founder Zhang Haixing previously served as a leader at Tesla China's Design and Research Center, where he was deeply involved in the early-stage R&D and design of the Optimus robot. For almost the entire history of fighter aviation, one rule remained unchanged, Avoid the stall. At extreme angles of attack, airflow separates from the wings and control surfaces lose effectiveness. The aircraft enters a region where pilots have very little authority or control over the aircraft. NASA decided to ask a different question, What if a fighter could remain controllable after entering the stall? Between 1987 and 1996, NASA, the USA Navy and McDonnell Douglas transformed a pre-production FA -18 Hornet into the High Alpha Research Vehicle (HARV) a flying laboratory designed to explore flight beyond conventional aerodynamic limits. The solution was unlike anything seen on an operational fighter at the time across the world. Instead of relying only on aerodynamic control surfaces, engineers installed six thrust-vectoring paddles around the exhaust of two General Electric F404 engines. These massive control surfaces redirected engine thrust itself, allowing the aircraft to manoeuvre when normal controls were becoming ineffective. But making it work required solving an extreme materials challenge. The paddles sat directly in the engine exhaust stream, exposed to enormous temperatures and mechanical forces. They were built using Inconel, a nickel-based superalloy designed to maintain strength in extreme heat. Special actuation systems had to move these structures precisely while surviving repeated high-temperature operation, all were purpose built. The modification added around 2,200 lb (1,000 kg) of thrust-vectoring hardware alone, turning the F/A-18 into one of the most heavily instrumented research aircraft of its era. HARV completed 385 research flights in Area 51, demonstrating controlled flight at around 70° angle of attack, a regime where conventional fighters would normally lose control. The data collected helped shape the future of advanced fighter design, influencing later programs including the F-22 Raptor, where thrust-vectoring became an operational capability. HARV was built as a research aircraft with a clear combat purpose, to understand how far fighter manoeuvrability could be pushed. Ukraine’s First All-Robot Assault Force Just Won Its First Battle | David Axe, Forbes That Ukraine even needs so many unmanned weapons points to a deep manpower shortage. A Ukrainian national guard brigade just orchestrated an all-robot combined-arms operation, mixing crawling and flying drones for an assault on Russian positions in Kharkiv Oblast in northern Russia. “We are talking about dozens of units of robotic and unmanned equipment simultaneously on a small section of the front,” a spokesperson for the 13th National Guard Brigade explained. It was an impressive technological feat—and a worrying sign of weakness on the part of overstretched Ukrainian forces. Unmanned ground vehicles in particular suffer profound limitations, and still can’t fully replace human infantry. That the 13th National Guard Brigade even needed to replace all of the human beings in a ground assault speaks to how few people the brigade has compared to the Russian units it’s fighting. The 13th National Guard Brigade defends a five-mile stretch of the front line around the town of Hlyboke, just south of the Ukraine-Russia border. It’s holding back a force of no fewer than four Russian regiments. That’s no more than 2,000 Ukrainians versus 6,000 or so Russians. The manpower ratio is roughly the same all along the 800-mile front line of Russia’s 34-month wider war on Ukraine. Russian troops still greatly outnumber Ukrainian troops, despite the Russians suffering around twice as many casualties as the Ukrainians since February 2022. The Ukrainian operation involved remote-controlled flying surveillance and minelaying drones, one-way explosive robots on the ground and in the air as well as gun-armed ground ’bots. In what amounted to a smaller-scale proof of concept for the recent combined-arms robot assault, a Ukrainian ground robot cleared a Russian trench in Kursk Oblast in western Russian back in September. Russia has attempted small-scale ground ’bot assaults of its own, but less successfully. The problem, of course, is that while robots are adept at surveilling and attacking, they’re terrible at holding. To hold ground, armies put infantry in trenches. They sit, watch, wait and call for reinforcements when the enemy attacks. It’s tedious, taxing duty that requires constant vigilance. Constant vigilance is difficult when a human operator is remotely observing the battlefield through the sensors of a maintenance-hungry ground robot. Machines break down. And their radio datalinks are highly susceptible to enemy jamming, as the California think-tank RAND discovered when it gamed out a clash between hypothetical U.S. (“Blue”) and Russian (“Red”) army battalions partially equipped with armed ground drones. “Blue’s ability to operate was degraded significantly by Red’s jammers,” RAND concluded. This visual insight comes via a camera operating at thousands of frames per second, offering unprecedented detail of how the plasma evolves, interacts with the surrounding lithium blanket and outer regions, and ultimately radiates energy. The imaging enables scientists to observe how the ultra-hot core transitions outward into cooler zones, how magnetic confinement shapes the plasma behaviour, and how impurities or outer-region interactions influence the process. By giving a ‘star-in-a-donut’ view of fusion in action, this breakthrough adds a new diagnostic tool to the development of fusion energy, helping engineers refine the magnetic confinement, optimise plasma stability and better understand the heat and light flows at play. It was slowed down by 100x. All this was for 0.3s A tokamak is one of the most advanced devices ever created to achieve controlled nuclear fusion, the same process that powers the Sun. Its goal is simple in principle but incredibly challenging in practice: heat a gas until it becomes plasma, raise that plasma to over 100 million degrees, and confine it long enough for hydrogen nuclei to fuse and release energy. Because no material container can survive such temperatures, a tokamak uses powerful magnetic fields to hold and shape the plasma like an invisible cage. The device has a distinctive doughnut-shaped (toroidal) chamber surrounded by magnetic coils. When the machine is switched on, electric currents and external magnets work together to create helical magnetic fields that trap the plasma and keep it away from the walls. As the plasma spirals around these magnetic lines, it heats up dramatically. Additional heating comes from methods like radio-frequency waves and neutral-beam injection, pushing the plasma toward the extreme temperatures needed for fusion. Inside this tightly controlled environment, hydrogen isotopes such as deuterium and tritium can collide and fuse, releasing fast neutrons and a burst of energy. The goal of tokamak research is to reach a point where the fusion reactions produce more energy than the system consumes, a milestone known as “net energy gain.” Modern machines like ITER, JET, and Tokamak Energy’s ST40 are bringing this vision closer, using advanced diagnostics, superconducting magnets, and increasingly stable plasma control. 👉

🚨🇺🇸 In 1980, the United States built an aircraft for a mission that sounded impossible. Land a large military plane inside a stadium in the middle of Tehran. Rescue hostages. Take off again before anyone could respond. The aircraft was a Lockheed C 130 Hercules. The program was called Credible Sport. Engineers transformed the C 130 into something closer to a missile than a transport aircraft. They attached 30 rocket motors across the nose, wings, and fuselage. Some rockets fired downward to slow the aircraft just seconds before touchdown. Others fired forward to bring it to an almost instant stop. More rockets pointed backward to blast the aircraft into the air during takeoff. The goal was extreme short takeoff and landing inside a confined urban stadium with no runway. Pilots trained to descend steeply at night, ignite rockets just above the ground, stop in a few hundred feet, load hostages, then launch out using raw rocket thrust. Everything had to be perfect. One mistimed rocket meant total destruction. During testing, a malfunction caused a crash and exposed how dangerous the concept truly was. The aircraft survived. The idea survived. The mission never happened. Diplomacy freed the hostages before Credible Sport was deployed. But for a brief moment in history, a C 130 was turned into a rocket powered rescue aircraft designed to invade a capital city, land in a stadium, and escape. No aircraft before or since has been built for a mission this extreme.

i don't think people realize what's happening in Chinese robotics. this one manufacturer might be the most impressive AND most concerning company on Earth right now let me explain... Unitree Robotics sells a humanoid robot for $5,900. their robot dog costs $1,600 (Boston Dynamics charges $74,500 for theirs for context). you can literally buy these on Amazon today. so obviously the first question is: how is that even possible? the answer starts with a guy who couldn't pass his English exam. Wang Xingxing grew up in Zhejiang province. for his master's thesis, he decided to build a quadruped robot. budget: about $3,000. for context, $3,000 for this kinda robot is nothing. off-the-shelf servo motors alone would've eaten that twice over. so Wang did the only thing he could: he designed and machined every single component himself. motors, joints, controllers, the frame. all of it. the resulting robot was janky and imperfect. but it worked. and the video went viral globally. after graduating he joined DJI. but he quit after two months, and this is 2016, when DJI was arguably the hottest hardware company in China. walking away from that with no money to start a robotics company is a... specific kind of stubborn. he launches Unitree with $280K from a single angel investor. tiny office in Hangzhou. 50 square meters. but the money runs out fast. he can't make payroll for three years. the company almost dies in 2017. but emergency government funding arrives with days to spare. he survives, barely, and keeps building. this is where it gets really fascinating IMO. this founding constraint, building everything yourself because you literally cannot afford to buy parts, never went away. even after funding rounds started landing. even after revenue kicked in. it just became the company's permanent DNA. Unitree now manufactures 90%+ of its core components in-house. motors, reducers, controllers, encoders, LiDAR, etc the founder's $3,000 robot thesis ended up being an architectural decision that turned out to be structurally superior. think about what that means in practice. Boston Dynamics needs a better motor? they negotiate with a supplier, wait on lead times, qualify the part. but when Unitree needs one, they design theirs internally and have a new version in production within weeks. that gap compounds every cycle. Unitree shipped three separate humanoid platforms in 18 months. Figure AI has shipped one. Tesla has shipped zero commercially. the results are getting hard to dismiss. 23,700 robot dogs shipped in 2024 (roughly 70% of the entire global market). 7,000+ humanoids deployed. over 600 industrial sites running their quadrupeds. $140M+ revenue, profitable every year since 2020. for perspective: no Western humanoid competitor is profitable. not one. OK. now here's where the "most concerning" part of this starts... if you watched the DJI story unfold, you already recognize the shape. affordable Chinese hardware quietly saturates global markets. years later, the national security questions arrive, after the install base is already massive. drones, then EVs, then AI. now robots. Unitree is running this exact playbook in real time. in April 2025, researchers found an undocumented backdoor in their Go1 robot. a remote tunnel letting anyone control the robot and stream its camera feed. default password: pi/123. 1,919 vulnerable units exposed globally. including machines at MIT, Princeton, and Carnegie Mellon. but it gets worse. every Unitree robot shares the same hardcoded encryption key. encrypt the word "unitree" and you get root access to any of them. one compromised robot can spread to every Unitree robot in Bluetooth range automatically. a literal robot botnet. the G1 quietly transmits sensor data to Chinese servers every five minutes. audio, video, GPS, LiDAR spatial mapping, with no notification, no consent, no opt-out. PLA footage has shown Go2 robots with mounted weapons. Ukrainian forces literally deployed weaponized units on the actual frontline. and every member of the bipartisan House China Committee signed a letter calling for Unitree's military company designation. Wang signed a 2022 pledge alongside Boston Dynamics not to weaponize robots. but pledges don't survive contact with shipping hardware to open markets. and under China's 2025 rules restricting military-related speech, Unitree couldn't publicly confirm PLA use even if they wanted to. 50,000+ of these robots are now deployed globally. some at institutions that probably should've asked harder questions before connecting them to their networks. the security stuff is real and people should know about it. but i also think it's important not to let that overshadow what's actually been built here. a 35-year-old who failed his English exam created a robotics company that's outshipping and outpricing every Western competitor while being the only profitable humanoid maker on Earth. most impressive and most concerning company in the world right now.

Folding aerodynamic surfaces allow the RVV-SDM to fit inside the Su-57, avoiding external pylons that would increase radar visibility and drag. 🔸 The “fire-and-forget” capability allows the Su-57 to launch, change course and leave the threatened area while the missile independently completes the final stage of the interception. 🔸 RVV-SDM fills the middle layer of the Su-57’s air-combat arsenal between the short-range RVV-MD2 and long-range RVV-BD. Rosoboronexport is also offering the missile with the Su-57E and says it can be integrated onto other Russian-made fighters after modification. That gives foreign Su-57 operators access to the same combination of internal carriage, improved range and guidance built to operate through electronic warfare. For NATO pilots, switching on the jammer may no longer provide a clean escape route. The signal intended to protect the aircraft could instead help the Russian missile find it.
