What that represents is a disregard not only for our clients’ constitutional rights, but also for the norms, procedures, and principles that have defined the DOJ and the FBI for essentially their entire existence. If people don’t bring these kinds of suits to challenge such actions, it’s unclear whether there will be any opportunity not only to vindicate their rights, but also to have courts tell the government: you can’t do this.
