Stuck on Maina & Kingangi: How Millennials Gave Away Their Music, Their Clubs and the Revolution Club playlists are the cleanest proof of Millennial exclusion from ordinary life. Millennials let Boomers and Gen X dictate the soundtrack, then stayed inside that era, abandoned their own music, and sacrificed their own youth. That is why they recently mourned Dolly Parton harder than the Boomers who actually lived her prime. Look at Country Night, Soul Night, any retro branded event: the floor is packed with Millennials obsessed with music that is not theirs. While the world moved, they remained locked on the same twenty tracks Maina and Kingangi hammered on heavy rotation. Their memory bank of songs is tiny. DJs noticed and isolated them even though they still hold the spending power. The sprawling Millennial Cookout events now mushrooming across the country proves the same point: the DJs and performers booked for those nights still do not play for the people writing the cheques. The same self-erasure jumped into politics. Millennials are now the cluster pushing William Ruto hardest. The infiltrators who sabotaged the Gen Z revolution just so happen to be millennials: Boniface Mwangi, Larry Madowo, Hanifa Adan, Polo Kimani, Eve Maina, Pauline Njoroge, Morara Kebaso, Kasmuel McOure, Andrew Kibe, Abel Mutua, Mwafreeka, Eddie Butita, Comedian YY, Oga Obinna, Sajjid Vayani and the rest of that list. Degenerate hoodlums Andrew Kibe, Sajjid Vayani and Abel Mutua are promoting civil war and return to one-party state respectively, in a desperate attempt to placate to the British-backed war criminal and mass murderer. And instead of condemning, socially-isolating and evicting these overgrown babies nursing Moi-era nostalgia, Millennials are still embracing them. These are people who should not get service in any restaurant or supermarket. Hoteliers should escort them out of their facilities and forfeit the money. A generation parked in ideological, social and cultural no-man’s-land, still unable to break the Boomer/Gen X chokehold, is being overtaken by events in real time. It starts with the same hunger: seeking acceptance and validation from generations they do not belong to. It felt cool to do “Soul” in their teens and ignore the musical evolution happening under their own noses. For instance these are some of the songs on my YouTube playlist from that period and I can wager my last dime that you will never hear these tracks in a club. The DJs in circulation simply copy the same mainstream-media depravity and creative scarcity that trained them.
