I’m now making a World of Warcraft inspired single-player RPG with some RuneScape elements for the browser with GPT-6 Astra. I literally had the idea while drinking my morning coffee and thought… while I have another Astra project to develop treatments for cancer is ongoing, why not start this too! 😅 It’s still a very early version, but it’s already actually playable! Combat works, you can chop down trees and gather resources, and I’m starting to build out the world, progression, quests, loot, item tables and other RPG systems. I know this will surprise some but I used to be a serious gamer, I just know this stuff hah! Maybe I’ll eventually turn it into an MMORPG so we can form rival Codex vs. Claude vs Grok guilds, but no cheating with the AI bots. 😂

The last "modern" game I ever played was World of Warcraft, from 2004 to 2010, the end of Wrath of the Lich King. I know there were MMORPGs before (and after), but when the original World of Warcraft launched in 2004, it felt closer to "perfection" than any game before or since. The first time you equipped a green item! The first time you swapped it for a blue! And the envy of seeing someone with purple gear, omg! Saving up for a mount and the catharsis when you could finally afford one! The first time you entered the Deadmines, the foolish solo attempt on Hogger only to realize instantly it was a death sentence, stepping into Alterac Valley battlegrounds and being in awe of its size, wiping on Ragnaros again and again before finally killing him, and the sheer joy of celebrating together with your guild. The excitement and awe of entering Naxxramas for the first time, struggling to down Patchwerk, the teamwork, the slow progress, seeing Sapphiron dead on the frozen ground and being moments away from Kel’Thuzad… so close! It truly felt like a massive world - not just in size, but in stories. The announcement of The Burning Crusade and the Dark Portal appearing in the Blasted Lands; you couldn’t wait to walk through it. Then the ultimate climax when Wrath of the Lich King launched, eventually facing the most badass character in gaming history: Arthas. World of Warcraft was magic. Until it wasn’t. Just like Blizzard was once the greatest game studio of all - until they weren’t. Warcraft used to be tough, glorious and epic... now it's pink Disney fluff. Nothing has recaptured that feeling from 2004 to 2010. I wonder if anything ever will again. I sometimes watch the trailer of the original WoW. It still hits close to the (gamer) heart…

Why don't we have this level of NPC density in recent AAA Games? Assassins Creed: Unity was by no means perfect, you can clearly see some NPCs popping into the frame while you're playing and some others not load properly, but it came out in 2014! It was designed on previous-gen consoles that ran on a Hard Drive and it was a game that was so rushed, Ubisoft never bothered to give it the love that it deserved. If there's one thing that still fascinates me about this game even today is the sheer number of NPCs that are rendered into this open world, it simply feels alive. By 2025, you'd think that most AAA game studios would have already gotten over these issues like NPCs popping into the frame and we would have Open World games that feel more alive than ever before. Nope, instead of huge number of NPCs, modern gaming companies are more focused on bringing Ray Tracing features which I have nothing against if it wasn't for having a such a small number of NPCs. I'm not an expert to determine what the exact reason behind having so few NPCs really is but I honestly would love if Ubisoft gave another shot at this kind of tech. Thankfully one of the games that looks like it will have this huge number of NPCs is Grand Theft Auto VI, by the screenshots and Trailers alone, it reminded me of how alive Unity really felt and I can't wait until that game comes out.
