I love illuminations in manuscripts. In medieval times, monks used to de-wax the other’s ears to get a dark yellow colour, but for a better golden colour, they kept dogs and de-wax them. Here is a wonderful page from the Aberdeen Bestiary (c 1200).

I love illuminated manuscripts. I could watch all day how they're made. I'm a teacher & at one school I taught at they teach students how to make illuminated manuscript in art class. It was very high level & just lovely. It's a lost art form, not many know how to do it.

...I've tried pure ground lapis lazuli paint (pan and tube) - and it always looks more gray than blue.. The pan is a nice blue - but the final lay is more gray...sad....Not cheap - and not true lapis blue on application....
