Before telling you about butterflies generally, let me tell you something spectacular about THIS butterfly. Its name is Alcon blue butterfly. It is one of the most famous examples of an extreme social parasite in the butterfly world. How the deception works: After the female Alcon Blue lays her eggs and they hatch, feeds on the plant for about 2–3 weeks, going through its first three instars (growth stages). When it reaches the fourth instar, the caterpillar drops to the ground and waits. It secretes chemicals (allomones) from a special gland that mimic the exact scent profile of the brood (larvae/pupae) of a myrmica ants. When the worker ants encounter the caterpillar, they'll mistake it for one of their own lost larvae, and carry it back into their underground nest. In some populations, the caterpillar even makes tiny sounds that imitate the “queen ant” calls, which elevates its status inside the colony. Ants will actually prefer feeding the caterpillar over their own larvae! The caterpillar then becomes a ruthless predator and eats hundreds of ant grubs over the next 10–22 months. After almost a year (or even two in some cases), the caterpillar pupates inside the ant nest. The adult butterfly emerges, inflates its wings, and crawls out of the nest (often at dawn when ants are less active).
