Our economic diplomacy with the US has failed badly, as evinced by Mr. Modi suddenly surrendering to a clearly one-sided trade deal in which India has made firm pledges especially to import from American farmers, while the US has made vague commitments to allow for greater exports from India. Not only that, days after the agreement, the US imposed a 125.87% import duty on solar modules from India. Our strategic diplomacy has received repeated blows by President Trump repeatedly cozying up to the Pakistani establishment and reverting to the hyphenation of India and Pakistan. The Prime Minister may, through his means, manage to get awards. But the fact is that the self-declared Vishwaguru has been exposed and the world, especially the US, has got his measure.

Now the Chinese Foreign Minister makes a similar claim and says China also mediated. On July 4, 2025, the Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen Rahul Singh had publicly stated that during Operation Sindoor, India was actually confronting and combating China. Given that China was decisively aligned with Pakistan, Chinese claims of having mediated between India and Pakistan are concerning - not just because they directly contradict what the people of our country have been led to believe, but because they seem to make a joke of our national security itself. This claim must also be understood in the context of our relationship with China. We have begun re-engagement with them - but unfortunately it has been on Chinese terms. The Prime Minister’s clean chit to China on June 19, 2020, has considerably weakened India’s negotiating position. Our trade deficit is at record highs and much of our exports are dependent on imports from China. Provocative actions by China in relation to Arunachal Pradesh continue unabated. Human rights activists in New York City right now are taking to the streets to protest the visit of Mohan Bhagwat, the leader of the RSS, a right wing Hindu nationalist paramilitary organization. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani Mamdani has come out against the visit, saying that the RSS does not represent the vision of India he was raised with as "a pluralistic society of a secular Republic that believed in the belonging of each and every person who was from India." "It has been incredibly troubling to see the rise of a movement that is predicated on an exclusionary vision,” Mamdani said. Prime Minister Modi came up through the RSS as a volunteer before entering politics. The U.S. barred modi from entry in 2005 over the 2002 Gujarat riots, during which Hindu nationalist mobs - including some linked to the RSS - killed more than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims. The U.S. lifted the ban in 2014 when he became PM.
