Power changes what’s possible on the lunar surface. Our Power Tower is a 20-meter-tall, vertically deployed solar array system designed to provide more than 10 kilowatts of power for Moon Base operations at the lunar South Pole. Its modular architecture will support future surface networks, extending power beyond the lander to the assets that need it most. Explore the concept in our animation below, then watch a successful real-world deployment:

Japanese startup GITAI has developed a lunar robotic rover called R1 for exploration, mining, and maintenance work on the Moon. The rover successfully completed testing at JAXA’s Mock Lunar Surface Environment. R1 features dual robotic arms and demonstrated driving, obstacle clearance, and solar panel assembly during the tests, which were conducted in 2021.

Since the initial design of the modular FLEX rover, Astrolab has focused on developing a mobility solution to meet the near- and long-term needs of the lunar economy. Use cases include everything from transporting large payloads on the lunar surface in lander-agnostic containers to deploying essential lunar infrastructure. Activities like rolling out cables are crucial for establishing and connecting alternative power sources on the Moon. For example, cable roll-out is key in the deployment and operations of fission power systems and other critical infrastructure. Early in rover development, we performed field tests of custom payloads that could support power and comms infrastructure, collect samples, and facilitate the use of lunar resources. These tests informed the development of our design to ensure FLEX is as “flexible” as possible.

Astrolab is gearing up to send its FLEX lunar rover to the Moon aboard a SpaceX Starship, marking a major step forward in lunar exploration. Roughly the size of an SUV, the rover is built to carry two astronauts while also being capable of remote operation from Earth. Designed for future missions, FLEX will play a key role in helping crews explore and navigate the Moon’s south pole, supporting both human presence and robotic operations on the lunar surface.

🇺🇸NASA is now committed to a permanent Moon base and will never again abandon the lunar surface. In a major rethink of the Artemis program, Jared has laid out a concrete three-phase plan: up to 15 robotic landers will first scout landing sites, followed by regular crewed visits every six months to build habitats for long-duration stays. The goal is sustained human presence on the Moon, not just flags and footprints. Source: The Economist

This little rover is packed up for a lunar journey! CADRE is a tech demo featuring three autonomous mini rovers. Without direct commands, they’ll carry out experiments on the Moon, take images of the lunar surface, and use radar to see what lies beneath.

To explore large regions of the lunar surface, astronauts will need rovers. We're building the ultimate planetary mobility vehicle that will enable sustained human presence on the Moon, support construction of a Moon base, be the last-mile lunar logistics solution, and much more.

Zinova and LimX Dynamics tested the Tron 2 platform in a scaled-down construction demonstration to explore how robots could handle real building tasks. Tron 2 is a modular robot that can switch between dual-arm, wheeled, and bipedal configurations, allowing it to work at different heights and angles. During the demonstration, the robots assembled wooden formwork and placed and tied multiple layers of steel reinforcement bars.

For 25+ years, we’ve sustained human presence on the ISS. It’s our testbed for life support, spacesuits, and long-duration flight. Now we’re taking those lessons to the Moon. Starting in 2027, robotic landers and rovers will build toward a steady cadence as we construct a lunar base and extend American leadership to Mars and beyond.

China has established the first two-way high-speed laser communication link between Earth and the Moon — over 400,000 km apart. 100 Mbps downlink. 1.25 Mbps uplink. An 8K image can be transmitted in about 12 seconds. This is not just a communications experiment. China is building the data infrastructure for its next lunar missions, crewed landings, and eventually a permanent research presence on the Moon. Before you build a lunar base, you build the road. In space, that road is made of light.

Meet some of the people behind NASA Artemis II. 🌖🧑‍🚀 We asked NASA’s Johnson Space Center employees how they contribute to Artemis II and if they had any well wishes for the crew. Artemis II is NASA’s next giant leap: the first crewed flight around the Moon in more than 50 years, a critical test of Orion’s systems, and a major step toward returning humans to the lunar surface and building a long‑term presence on the Moon. It’s a team effort on the ground and in space!
