While comparing Khamenei 2.0 to his dead father, it’s important to remember that Ali Khamenei rose to power in 1989, at the age of 50, after 25 years of cultivating an image as an unworldly cleric, mainly interested in poetry and philosophy rather than political power. Even his fiercest critics recognise that Ali Khamenei was a good orator and knew how to read the room. He was a violent, manipulative, and brutal theocrat but knew how to use words, and did that very well in meetings with Revolutionary Guards commanders and hardline clerics in the first years after coming to power to gain their trust. On the other hand, Mojtaba Khamenei has never (NEVER!) given a public speech. In one private video message sent to his students at the seminary, shared on social media and here, Mojtaba has difficulty putting two sentences together and getting to the point. That will pose a problem for him and the regime. In a situation in which the “supreme” leader must live in a bunker for the foreseeable future, he and his regime will have a very difficult time working on his image, earning his followers' trust, and finding new acolytes. The result will be an even more brutal rule than his father’s, with no need to pretend that his rule is legitimate or to reach a consensus with different parts of Iranian society. Mojtaba may have outmanoeuvred his rivals to come to power, but years of operating in the shadow of his father will catch up with him soon. The selection of Mojtaba Khamenei was laid down as early as 2009. Two years ago, Mojtaba also publicly announced the suspension of his fiqh classes and stepped away from clerical positions in order to prepare for power (this is the only short video that exists of him speaking). No one has the ability to compete with the security structure that has been built over the past 37 years. As we have said before, the IRGC oligarchy and the clerical circles in Mashhad and Qom have embedded themselves in the power structure in such a way that it does not fall into the hands of outsiders. Iranian protesters have produced and circulated mock missing-person notices for Mojtaba Khamenei, ridiculing the new Islamic Republic leader’s prolonged absence from public view since his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed. The satirical poster says Mojtaba was “last seen” at the Leader’s Office in Tehran but no one has seen him since. Styled like a public missing-person alert, it jokingly names the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as the reporting party. The notice lists his personal details, including age, height and appearance, alongside a cartoon figure in clerical clothing. It offers a “reward” of 2 million tomans (almost $12.5) for information about his whereabouts. President Zardari, President Pezeshkian reaffirm commitment to strengthening Pakistan-Iran ties and regional peace Islamabad: 23 June 2026 — President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian met President Asif Ali Zardari today at Aiwan-e-Sadr. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, mainly regional peace and security, bilateral and regional connectivity, economic cooperation and other issues of mutual interest. The Iranian President was accompanied by Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Chief of the President’s Office Mr. Mohsen Haji Mirzaei, Minister of Interior Mr. Eskandar Momeni, Saeed Abbas Mousavi Chief of Political Affairs of President’s Office and Ambassador of Iran to Pakistan Mr. Reza Amiri Moghaddam. From the Pakistani side Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Chairman PPP Mr. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, ex-Foreign Minister, Minister for Interior Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Chief Whip Senate Senator Saleem Mandviwala and Dr. Asim Hussain were present during the meeting. President Zardari welcomed President Pezeshkian on his first State Visit to Pakistan after the recent conflict and noted that the visit reflects the longstanding brotherly relations between the two countries and a desire to stay together in good and bad times. He congratulated President Pezeshkian on the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and expressed the hope that the ongoing technical-level negotiations would culminate in permanent peace in the region. The President reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled support for Iran’s peace, stability, national unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He stated that Pakistan has consistently opposed one-sided initiatives and has supported dialogue and diplomacy as the means to achieve a durable and sustainable solution to regional and global challenges. He also underscored Pakistan’s commitment to preserving the unity of the Muslim Ummah while maintaining strong fraternal relations with the countries of the Gulf region. President Zardari once again expressed condolences on the martyrdom of His Eminence Ali Hosseini Khamenei and said that Pakistan would participate in his funeral. President Pezeshkian thanked Pakistan for its positive and constructive efforts in support of peace and dialogue and appreciated the support extended by Pakistan during recent challenging circumstances.
