MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL was released 51 years ago today. Led Zeppelin invested £31,500 for the filming, Pink Floyd put in £21,000, & Ian Anderson contributed £6,300, because no studio would fund a comedy about King Arthur and the Holy Grail.

Run away, run away run away!

You will not be able to convince me that The Holy Grail is not: • Monty Python's best film • One of the funniest films ever • Accidentally a top-tier D&D film • Eternally excused from being remade I devote this cover I drew to its brilliance.

Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you! I mean, if I went around saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!

"We want... a shrubbery!"

One day son all this will be yours... Whaaaat, the curtains?

But they couldn’t afford horses…..

"Well she turned me into a newt" "A newt?" " I got better"

And it is as relevant as ever

I first saw this story a few months ago. Cheers to Zep, Floyd and Anderson for giving us one of the greatest comedies of all time!

And don't forget that it was George Harrison who put up the money for 'Life of Brian.' Thank goodness for rock and roll!

And George Harrison was principal financer for their next, much more controversial film, Life of Brian.

"What do we burn besides witches?" "MORE WITCHES!"

They couldn’t afford real horses in their budget. And so Patsy became movie legend!

We need more rock groups and comedians making fun of stupid traditions. Now, more than ever!

@JD_Sing

"When evil raised his ugly head, Sir Robin turned his tail and FLED ! When Brave Sir Robin turned about, he was so brave he chickened OUT" " Brave, Brave Brave Sir Robin!"

@tedcruz Saw it on the big screen last year for the 50th Anniversay. Visited Doune Castle a few years ago. They have coconut shells in the gift shop. 🥥🥥

@IngrameThomas Love the mud-gathering peasants saying: “Oo made you king? We’re an anarcho-syndicalist commune ‘ere!”

51 years, and the jokes have not aged a bit. Now, where can I find a Grail-shaped beacon?

Led Zeppelin’s £31,500 ≈ $460,000–$465,000 in 2026 USD. Pink Floyd’s £21,000 ≈ $305,000–$310,000 in 2026 USD. Ian Anderson’s £6,300 ≈ $91,000–$93,000 in 2026 USD. These are approximate modern equivalents, accounting for UK inflation from 1975 (when the film was funded and released) to 2026, followed by conversion to USD at recent exchange rates (around 1.34–1.35 USD per GBP as of early 2026).

We could use a holy hand grenade about now.

"Have at you!" "Nee, nee ,nee !"

😂I always loved this scene. Thank you to my fave band Pink Floyd as well as the awesome Led Zeppelin and Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull).

@BROWNLOWJ74 I went to a Pink Floyd gig at Knebworth Park in 1975 and the Python team performed sketches between bands. Not sure if it was part of the deal!

I find it funny just how far that movie reaches.

George Harrison formed a production company to pay for the filming of Life of Brian.

This is surprisingly devastating to my ego. 51 years ago…

Way cool that Ian tossed serious money for the film!!

"no studio would fund a comedy about King Arthur and the Holy Grail"

For those youngsters who don't know, Ian Anderson was the lead singer, flutist, and rhythm guitarist for Jethro Tull... a pure musical genius largely unequaled in commercial music..

And Neil Innes sung, one of only two non-Pythons (Douglas Adams was the other) to contribute original material to the Python oeuvre. A golden generation.

Ian Anderson helped get it made? Very cool (he never gets the credit, not that I’ve seen. Zeppelin, Floyd, and Harrison always near by)

“One day son, all of this will be yours” [gestures towards the world outside the window] “What, the curtains?” Terry Jones’ delivery of that line never fails to make me laugh my arse off 😂

I saw it at the Chicago premiere / everyone got coconuts as we took our seats / no idea why at the time.
