“Fade to Grey” is Visage's breakthrough single, released in 1980. Written by Billy Currie, Chris Payne, and Midge Ure, with English lyrics by Steve Strange, the synth-pop classic became one of the defining songs of the New Romantic movement. It reached #8 on the UK Singles Chart, #1 in Germany and Switzerland, #2 in Belgium and the Top 10 across much of Europe. The song's distinctive bilingual vocals (English by Steve Strange and French by Brigitte Arens) helped give it its mysterious, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Although it was Visage's only major international hit, "Fade to Grey" became hugely influential on synth-pop and electronic music, inspiring countless artists and remaining one of the most iconic tracks of the early 1980s.

"Shaddap You Face" began as a joke. Australian singer Joe Dolce wrote the song while developing a comedic Italian-Australian character named Giuseppe, combining an exaggerated accent with humorous observations about family expectations and generational conflicts. What started as a novelty performance quickly evolved into one of the most unexpected international hits of the early 1980s. Released in 1980, the song became a worldwide phenomenon, reaching No. 1 in Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, New Zealand, Ireland, and Belgium. It sold millions of copies worldwide and became Australia's best-selling single at the time. The song is also famous for preventing Vienna by Ultravox from reaching No. 1 in the UK, creating one of the most debated chart battles in British pop history and turning the rivalry into a lasting symbol of the debate between "serious" music and novelty pop.

“Nikita” is from Elton John’s 1985 album Ice on Fire. Written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, the synth-pop ballad became one of his biggest hits of the 1980s, peaking at #3 on the UK Singles Chart and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, while reaching #1 in Germany and Switzerland. The song features backing vocals from George Michael, who was at the peak of his Wham! fame, adding another layer to its lush production. Although “Nikita” is traditionally a male name in Russian, Elton was aware of this when the song was written and the character was nevertheless portrayed as a female East German border guard. The iconic music video, directed by Ken Russell, starred Anya Major, the same actress and athlete who famously threw the hammer in Apple’s legendary “1984” commercial.

Like many of Boney M.'s biggest hits, the male vocals on the studio recording of “Hooray! Hooray! One of the song's most memorable live performances took place at the 1979 Sopot International Song Festival, where singer Liz Mitchell playfully invited a man from the audience onto the stage to dance with the group, creating one of Boney M.'s most charming moments. “Hooray!
