Today is the 25th anniversary of Gothic, a classic open-world RPG developed by Piranha Bytes and released on March 16, 2001. You play as a nameless hero, a convict thrown into a penal colony in the Valley of Mines, sealed by a magical barrier. The kingdom needs the colony's magical ore to fight orcs, so prisoners run the place after a rebellion. Three rival factions dominate: the powerful Old Camp, the brutal New Camp, and the fanatical Swamp Camp Through quests, combat, and alliances, you uncover ancient secrets, dark gods and other evil threatening the world. The game felt highly immersive with a great medieval fantasy vibe. For 2001 this was pretty epic.

Heroes of Might and Magic III is easily one of the best round-based strategy games ever made. Considering all the greats from the 90s era, I think the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise is among the very, very top. Incredibly beautiful and detailed graphics, a wonderful soundtrack, and classic turn-based gameplay; all that made for perfect late night sessions that usually went on for way too long. It was the stereotypical "maybe just one more round" game that kept on going... if you've been there, you know. Heroes of Might and Magic is one of the longest living franchises in gaming history, now entering its 31st year, with the first release in 1995 and latest release in 2025 (Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era). If you were/are a turn-based strategy fan, I bet you played it. I miss New World Computing...

Has anyone here played Final Fantasy XVI, the latest numbered title that came out three years ago? Personally, I had a really great time with it, but it was definitely one of the more divisive games among Final Fantasy fans. What I loved most was the story and presentation. It felt like the kind of visual spectacle I had always imagined while playing Final Fantasy games over the years. The summon battles were absolutely breathtaking and felt truly cinematic. That said, because it wasn’t a traditional turn-based RPG and didn’t even have a real party system, a lot of people criticized it as “basically Devil May Cry with a Final Fantasy skin.” Honestly though, after Final Fantasy XV disappointed many fans by feeling overly stretched out and unfinished, Naoki Yoshida — the producer who famously turned Final Fantasy XIV into a huge success — was brought in to create a polished and complete experience as efficiently as possible. In that regard, I think the project was a success. I’m already looking forward to Final Fantasy XVII, whenever that finally happens. But realistically, it probably won’t come until after the third part of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth remake project is released.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora impressions after 15 hours: • One of the best looking games I've ever seen • Rock solid performance on PS5 • Third person mode was done very well, you really feel like a Na'vi running around • Solid story with lots of lore for Avatar fans • Third person gameplay is reminscent of Horizon but with firearms • Some light exploration. Open world content is not marked on the map unless you get a hint from an NPC. • Gathering resources is a heavy focus for crafting better gear and food • Plants and materials can have different quality levels depending on the conditions (i.e. to get a 'Pristine' one, you may have to pick it while it's raining or during the night) • Movement and traversal feels good, fast paced and fluid • Combat feels good and is mostly centered around ranged weapons • You can hack devices and enemy bots to disable them and target their weak spot Overall, if you like the idea of exploring a vast and stunning open world while immersing yourself in the world of Avatar - don't sleep on this. Ultima VII: The Black Gate (Origin Systems, 1992) was one of the most complex yet fun roleplaying games I ever played. Its world is huge and only if you love reading a lot dialogue and being a rather patient player, Ultima VII is for you. I often wonder how terrible such a game would do today, with players' attention spans maxing out after a few minutes at best. The Black Gate was critically acclaimed and commercially successful, being widely regarded as a high point in the series. In an interview, Richard Garriott stated that Ultima VII was "the most masterfully executed of the Ultima series". He has also stated that the game was, along with Ultima IV, his own favorite installment overall. Ultima VII is also the first game in the series that runs entirely in real-time, and only pauses when the inventory, the menu, or a dialogue is open, significantly affecting combat. This was one of the bigger changes from the predecessors and something that a turn based RPG fan had to get used to. It certainly took me some time.
