Article 12 of the Lausanne Treaty grants Turkey sovereignty only over islands within three miles of its coast. Imia lies 3.8 miles from the Turkish coast; as he states unequivocally, “this should not be a matter of debate.” ⚠️ Yet in 1996, Turkey manufactured a dispute, challenged Greek sovereignty over the Imia islets, escalated tensions by landing troops on one of them, and pushed the crisis to the brink of war.
