Masvingo’s popular airtime vendor Ronald Machema, widely known as Rony, has broken his silence after being released under the Presidential Amnesty and is now pleading for forgiveness. Rony was convicted of fraud and theft after duping an unsuspecting victim who trusted him deeply of over $1,250. He convinced Ecocash agent Nickson Kwirirai to send $1,250 to two different accounts, claiming the money was urgently needed by a popular businessman, but it later turned out he was lying. I have been entrusted with the painful duty by a senior member of our profession to announce to my professional colleagues in Zimbabwe and beyond the passing of Zimbabwean journalist Lewis Machipisa, who died in London today. Lewis and I were classmates at journalism school at the Zimbabwe Institute of Mass Communications. Our paths crossed again at the BBC World Service in 2003 when he moved to London, and I was returning to Zimbabwe. He lived in London until today when he passed on. I am deeply saddened by his passing and extend my condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. May his soul rest in peace.

Monica Mukwada, a former councillor and MP had the mic snatched from her by Zanu PF hooligans as she made her presentation at a Public Hearing on Constitutional Amendment Number 3 Bill in Mutare today. She had to be escorted out of the hall after the presentation due to threats of violence. She however, withered the storm as the hooligans booed her but still managed to make important points about the bill. She said that extending the terms of current MPs, Senators and the President is against the wishes of the people since the electorate no longer wants most of them. Further “when we sent the President, MPs and Senators to Parliament, our agreement was that they will be there until 2028. That position has not changed Mr chairman”. She said traditional leaders preside over court cases and judges cannot be politicians. She said the war was fought for one man one vote and allowing a few to vote for the President is contrary to that which thousands of Zimbabweans lost their lives for.
