the idea of shape shifting eridians is now on my brain

like they're a species that doesn't need to take other creature's shape as often, maybe the ability comes from the need to blend/hide from predators when they sleep, but as they developed society they take care of each other when sleeping, so now they can shapeshift "for fun"

maybe they take the shape of other organisms on their planet, but I imagine they can't properly shapeshift into other Eridians, because there's something about using their own mass and unique characteristics that "translates" to other shapes

it takes Rocky until he's on his way to Erid the first time (before the taumoeba leak) to figure out how to take a human-ish shape (big fan of something still being Off™) but as the ship stopped working, he remains as Eridian because it takes less energy

so it's a surprise for Grace, maybe Rocky takes that shape during a bad mental health episode for Grace, or something, not sure

now I'm craving a whole ass fic with this concept, it's so interesting to me omg
