Problem was that after the Soviet union collapsed Russia abandoned the Soviet philosophy that their guns have to be cheap, reliable, easy to clean and have few moving parts

Ukranian army using mosin I thought only the donbass militias, now part of the russian army used them

Afaik both Russian and Ukrainian militias in the area used them, think I saw an article years ago saying they also used the old maxim guns from WW1 just cause it was so reliable as long as they had cold water around (which wasn't in short supply in the area)
