Ahead of World Malaria Day, yesterday I held a multi-sectoral meeting with the Parliamentary Forum on Malaria (UPFM) to breathe new life into the fight against one of the leading killer diseases. We were also privileged to host Prof. Steve Harvey from Johns Hopkins University, who is in Uganda to support UPFM in coming up with a community-centered approach to Malaria elimination. Prof. Steve Harvey is collaborating with a number of Ugandan university professors and other stakeholders to develop a multi-sectoral collaboration model to support communities in mosquito control activities. This effort will ensure that the primary responsibility for mosquito control lies with the community, complementing malaria control activities by the Ministry of Health and eventually leading to the elimination of Malaria. I also emphasized the need to mobilize and sensitize the public on the proper use of mosquito nets, planting of repellent plants, clearing of bushes, and stagnant waters around homes, among others. I once again thank members for all their efforts towards the success of this great cause and invite the general public to join Parliament’s Annual Malaria Walk tomorrow, whose objective is to raise awareness about the life-threatening disease.

Many people often times wonder why it is that mosquitoes transmit malaria from one person to another but same mosquito cannot transmit HIV from one person to another. I summarized the reason in this video but I will also reiterate 1. HIV cannot survive inside mosquitoes When mosquito bites someone infected with HIV, it actually picks up some of the virus . However the virus is rapidly broken down in the gut of the mosquito . Hence it does not get passed to the next person. 2. Mosquitoes do not inject previous blood into the next person When mosquitoes bite a person, they inject saliva into the person’s bite spot and this saliva is what prevents the blood from clotting while the mosquito sucks out the blood juice. It is through this process of injection of saliva that it passes Malaria , Dengue fever etc but HIV can’t be passed this way 3. HIV can only survive I specific body cells HIV needs specific body cells called CD4 cells to survive . Of course mosquito does not have those cells and HIV can thus not survive inside them. It is degraded immediately Therefore when next someone suggests that Mosquito can transmit HIV. Please feel free to give them a resounding slap on my behalf . Thank You Dr Penking

After what I saw during the early hours of today when I visited while they were sleeping(precisely 12:15AM)I had to go over 1000 mosquito nets to keep the mosquitoes away and save them from getting sick of malaria and also to help them sleep well at night....dear nyesom wike i heard you allegedly chased these thousands of people because you want to give your rich friends the land,while you are at it sit down and think about the insecurity this insensitive act from you will cause us,need I remind you these people left their towns and villages to the FCT because of the insecurity of their villages and who do blame for that "the government" now you are trying to push them to a state of desperation of survival, please Nyesom wike allocate and alternative place for them and save Nigerians from future insecurities
