Most data centers have semitruck-sized diesel backup generators, making sporadic smoke plumes a fact of life for many in Virginia. An analysis of the emissions found that pollution from the generators could cause respiratory symptoms and premature death.

In Loudoun County, data centers surround cemeteries. You can sit on a bench in the cemetery and hear the constant whirl of the machines. They sit across from homes, turning backyard views into massive, noisy data centers. Residents were told the noise was temporary. It wasn’t. The generators never turned off. The buildings are only part of the problem. Data centers need MORE LAND for high-voltage power lines and substations. In Loudoun County, they’re becoming more common than 7-Elevens. Don’t let them Virginia our Florida.

It is now the seventh day – something that has never happened before – of an emergency situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Because of Russian shelling, the plant has been cut off from power, disconnected from the electrical grid, and is being supplied with electricity by diesel generators. This is extraordinary. The generators and the plant were not designed for this, have never operated in this mode for long, and we already have information that one generator has failed. It is Russian shelling that prevents repair of the power lines to the plant and the restoration of basic safety. This is a threat to everyone – no terrorist in the world has ever dared to do to a nuclear plant what Russia is doing. And it is right that the world does not stay silent.
