Really hard business- the equipment is expensive and the molds are time consuming and skill intensive to design/ machine. I made a few injection molds years ago- and the level of precision is pretty high - tolerances are within a few 0.0001” . Tool and die makers are highly skilled and not easy to find.

You can say that about any industry. - Most people don't know anything about dairy chemistry or bovine psychology yet it's a $900B industry - Most people don’t know anything about escalator engineering or how escalators work yet it's a $60B industry what point are you trying to make... that careers exists?

What would be the best way to start learning about this from zero ?

id just start youtubing, chat gpting, and googling!

It’s expensive. We’re looking for work arounds during prototyping/ low quantity, but it’s not easy because we also need the parts to be food safe.

Glad I'm not “most people”

Learned about injection molding in my undergrad manufacturing class, and it’s stuck with me since then. For a long time, I’d pick up plastic products and look for parting lines, ejector pin & gate marks, ribs/bosses. It’s like AV geeks looking up every time a plane passes by🙂
