Most people think success in business comes down to technical knowledge. I could not disagree more. I took accounting in college and today I cannot even tell you if prepaid rent is a debit or a credit on the balance sheet. It had zero impact on my 41 year... career in commercial real estate. What actually mattered were the things no one ever taught: likability, persuasion, human behavior, and the ability to move someone from “no” to “yes.” Every interaction, every conversation, every email does one thing. It nudges that internal switch people have in their heads toward the direction you want it to go. We are all in sales whether we admit it or not. That is why my book, "Selling Buildings," is unvarnished. It is the good, the bad, and the ugly from four decades in the business. If it teaches something, great. If it inspires someone even a little, even better. But more than anything, I hope it helps people understand that success in this business has far more to do with how you make people feel than anything you learn in a classroom. Would you want to be a teacher on your staff as a principal? I have often asked teachers, would you want to be a learner in your own classroom, but the question above for administrators could be even more critical. If we do not support those closest to students every day in an effective manner, it is much harder for things to improve in schools. If we want learning to look different in classrooms, then leadership must also evolve. This doesn’t mean that everything done in the past has been wrong. Some things that mattered 50 years ago will matter now, both in learning and leadership. But replicating everything that was done in the past, whether it was effective or not, isn’t a great strategy for moving schools forward. I was blessed to learn from some amazing principals in my career, but I also learned about things that I hated as a teacher and swore that I would do my best not to replicate those strategies. I wrote this in my upcoming book co-authored with Allyson Apsey (Allyson Apsey) titled, “What Makes a Great Principal”: “If we do things in our schools and classrooms that were done hundreds of years ago that still work today, we should continue to do them. On the other hand, if we do new stuff just because it is new, but it doesn’t work, we shouldn’t be doing it. Whatever works for our community is where our focus should be, no matter when it originated.” What worked in the past? What would you change? What would you have wanted as a teacher, and how can you make that happen? Simply replicating the strategies of the past, whether good or bad, will not necessarily lead education to a better future. Innovation is crucial to leadership as much as it is to teaching and learning.

I love this idea from Jason Fried "Your only competition is your costs." Keep costs low, keep the team small, make stuff you want to use. You don't need the whole world: “A business is very simple. You got to make more than you spend. If you're making more than you spend, then your competition is your cost. That's what you're really in business against, how much it costs you to stay in business. It's not all the other alternatives that are on the market. You can't control what they're going to put out there, what they're going to price it at, all the things they're going to do. They're going to do what they're going to do. What I can control is how much it costs me to run my business, how much I sell my product for, and as long as I make more than I spend, I get to stay in business. And isn't that what this is all about, staying in business? That's what it's all about because I like this. I want to keep doing this. I can't keep doing it if I don't stay in business. I can't keep doing it if I make less than it costs me to make the things that I make. So I'm always thinking about the only competition I really have on an annual basis is to make sure that we make more as a company than it costs us to run the company. That's my real competition.”

Patrick Collison on the importance of beauty and craftsmanship when building products “If Stripe is a monstrously successful business, but what we make isn’t beautiful, and Stripe doesn’t embody a culture of incredibly exacting craftsmanship, I’ll be much less happy. I think the returns to both of those things in the world are really high. I think even beyond the pecuniary or financial returns, the world’s just uglier than it needs to be… One can do things well or poorly, and beauty is not a rivalrous good.” Patrick believes a commitment to craftsmanship and beauty played an important role in Stripe’s success: “My intuition is that more of Stripe’s success than one would think is downstream of the fact that people like beautiful things—and for kind of rational reasons because what does a beautiful thing tell you? Commercial real estate is the purest form of meritocracy there is. When Paul J. Massey and I started Massey Knakal, it was just the two of us and a secretary. No capital, no brand. Just hustle. In the clip below, a16z cofounder Ben Horowitz argues that culture drives how people in your company behave on a daily basis—and particularly, how they behave when you’re not looking. Is that phone call so important I need to return it today or can it wait until tomorrow? Can I ask for a raise before my annual review? Is the quality of this document good enough or should I keep working on it? Do I have to be on time for that meeting? Should I stay at the Four Seasons or the Red Roof Inn? Should I go home at 5 p.m. or 8 p.m.? Should we discuss the color of this new product for five minutes or thirty hours? If I know something is badly broken in the company, should I say something? Whom should I tell? Is winning more important than ethics? None of these things are in your mission statement or OKRs, but they determine many important things for your company, such as how people experience your company, what you’re like to do business with, what your company is like to work at, etc. And as Ben describes, what drives the culture is all of the little behaviors and cues people take on: “this is what I have to do to succeed in this company.” Culture can feel abstract and secondary when you pit it against a concrete result that’s right in front of you, but it’s a strategic investment in the company doing things the right way when you are not looking. It’s the set of assumptions your employees use to resolve the problems they face every day. It’s how they behave when no one is looking. If you don’t methodically set your culture, then two-thirds of it will end up being accidental, and the rest will be a mistake. Early on in my career, I had one business and I was still figuring it out. The decisions in front of me felt like everything was on the line. I needed a model. Something that could make every call clearer, big or small. What I figured out: all decision-making is value clarification. It comes down to what’s most important to you. Two people can look at the same situation and make completely different calls. Both right. Because the answer always comes back to what you value most. Next time a decision doesn’t feel clear, run it through OOC-EMR.

On focus, he pushes back against the idea that you need to be exceptional at everything: "Understand, none of us are unfailingly brilliant at everything. So, find the thing that you're good at and zone in on that. And that is what will create your success." But the fourth factor is where his message turns unexpected: "The most important thing is luck. You can do everything right, but it still not work for you. And you need to know that now." This reframes how he wants people to think about setbacks: "Failing does not make you a failure. Do not judge yourself. See it as a way to learn and to give yourself a better opportunity the next time." Martin Lewis then challenges a common assumption about what success actually delivers: "Success can be stressful. Success is not a synonym for happiness. As you go through your working careers, at sometimes you may want to make a call. I’m asking questions. My song Karmageddon is not political, although it is being politicised. It’s actually a conversation piece that questions what’s going on in the world and by writing it, I hope to bring some truth and awareness to light. I don’t consider myself a political artist or even someone who’s heavily interested in politics, I find a lot of it boring tbh. But with all the mayhem happening in the world, it feels impossible to ignore. We have the opportunity to use our voice to speak against corruption and injustices, and that feels more important now than ever. I hope that Karmageddon might inspire you and remind you that you’re not alone. We are more united than we think and there is every reason to be hopeful.

“And anyway, I wanted to clarify something that was told to me in a half-assed way by some fanatical people, because I don’t call these people fans, I call them fanatics. And thank God they eventually remove themselves from the community on their own, because fundamentally they were never really part of the community to begin with, given the kinds of actions and thoughts they have. Now, you all know very well that there are people among you who help me, whom I absolutely welcome and appreciate a lot, actually, probably more than what they even give me. And as a result, I do have a human, working relationship that goes beyond just being a fan, right? So of course, in certain circumstances, because of specific skills people have and the kind of help they give, it’s obvious that more conversations start happening and a more developed human relationship begins, beyond a simple… you know. That’s how life works. It’s not like I can live my life and talk to every single one of you in the exact same way. It’s normal,choices are made based on the situations that come up. Anyone who’s mentally healthy understands this and tries to build a human relationship with me in some way. But those who aren’t healthy think, “Well, why does she talk to her and not to me?” But I can’t talk to everyone. Even though I try to do it in my own way, if I started talking to every single one of you, my life would obviously be over. And I think that applies to anyone who has a community or a group of people who follow them. So then this thing came out about me going to Disneyland. But, holy crap, as they say, maybe! Maybe I would go to Disneyland! And even if I did go to Disneyland, it’s none of your fucking business if I want to go to Disneyland. What the fuck do you care if I want to go to Disneyland? It’s my business. Also, I haven’t been to Disneyland in 18 years, last time was with a friend from high school. But even then, it’s still my business if I want to go with whomever I want: if I’m dating someone or not, if I want to go with a friend, if I want to go with a fan I choose from among you. Is it my business or not? I mean, is everything okay with you people? And then, what the fuck does it change for you? Do you appreciate me for who I am? Good. Appreciate me for who I am and for what I do, not for who I’m with or where I go. Sometimes it feels like I’m talking to a jealous girlfriend. But I already, normally, believe me, don’t get involved with certain people, or a certain type of person, because jealousy and unresolved issues really bother me. Let me explain better. Let’s say I get into a relationship. My partner should never make jealousy scenes. You want to go to Disneyland with your friends? Go. Don’t go. What do I care? That’s your business. It’s great that our paths cross and we have a beautiful, loving life together, but that doesn’t erase my other relationships or my other bonds. Sometimes, with some people in this community, it feels like I’m dating them, like they think I’m their girlfriend. That’s not normal. You’re fanatics, you’re not well. So it’s actually a good thing if you don’t come to the meetups I organize. I even send you a kiss and bye-bye, good riddance, because you’re not right in the head. Anyway, what was I saying… maybe I’d really like to go to Disneyland, but honestly I don’t even have the head for Disneyland anymore. I’ve got other stuff going on in my brain, as they say, and for now I prefer working over going to Disneyland. Also, instead of Disneyland, I would’ve preferred the Maldives, if we really want to say it. Or at least the sea, one way or another. But if I go to London, if I go to Paris, it’s for one reason: to have the chance to work and create content. And on the other hand, to meet you. So if I go to Paris that day, it’s because I’m trying to organize a day where I can go and meet you for an hour or so, because I’m only there for a day. And I hope you can understand that.”

That’s how life works. It’s not like I can live my life and talk to every single one of you in the exact same way. It’s normal,choices are made based on the situations that come up. Anyone who’s mentally healthy understands this and tries to build a human relationship with me in some way. But those who aren’t healthy think, “Well, why does she talk to her and not to me?” But I can’t talk to everyone. Even though I try to do it in my own way, if I started talking to every single one of you, my life would obviously be over. And I think that applies to anyone who has a community or a group of people who follow them. So then this thing came out about me going to Disneyland. But, holy crap, as they say, maybe! Maybe I would go to Disneyland! And even if I did go to Disneyland, it’s none of your fucking business if I want to go to Disneyland. What the fuck do you care if I want to go to Disneyland? It’s my business. Also, I haven’t been to Disneyland in 18 years, last time was with a friend from high school. But even then, it’s still my business if I want to go with whomever I want: if I’m dating someone or not, if I want to go with a friend, if I want to go with a fan I choose from among you. Is it my business or not? I mean, is everything okay with you people? And then, what the fuck does it change for you? Do you appreciate me for who I am? Good. Appreciate me for who I am and for what I do, not for who I’m with or where I go. Sometimes it feels like I’m talking to a jealous girlfriend. But I already, normally, believe me, don’t get involved with certain people, or a certain type of person, because jealousy and unresolved issues really bother me. Let me explain better. Let’s say I get into a relationship. My partner should never make jealousy scenes. You want to go to Disneyland with your friends? Go. Don’t go. What do I care? That’s your business. It’s great that our paths cross and we have a beautiful, loving life together, but that doesn’t erase my other relationships or my other bonds. Sometimes, with some people in this community, it feels like I’m dating them, like they think I’m their girlfriend. That’s not normal. You’re fanatics, you’re not well. So it’s actually a good thing if you don’t come to the meetups I organize. I even send you a kiss and bye-bye, good riddance, because you’re not right in the head. Anyway, what was I saying… maybe I’d really like to go to Disneyland, but honestly I don’t even have the head for Disneyland anymore. I’ve got other stuff going on in my brain, as they say, and for now I prefer working over going to Disneyland. Also, instead of Disneyland, I would’ve preferred the Maldives, if we really want to say it. Or at least the sea, one way or another. But if I go to London, if I go to Paris, it’s for one reason: to have the chance to work and create content. And on the other hand, to meet you. So if I go to Paris that day, it’s because I’m trying to organize a day where I can go and meet you for an hour or so, because I’m only there for a day. And I hope you can understand that.”

Being Dominant means being the One in Control. Some people love it and some hate it, but either way, there is always someone in control and the areas where you are not the one in control, are where you have given that control to someone else! Being the one in control means being the one people TRUST to lead, to be in charge. And for us to hold that responsibility, we gotta be not only comfortable with that role, but to love it! To want it. Control holds negative connotations, yet if it is exerted by someone with positive intentions, it is very healthy. It means you trust yourself and don't need to rely on others to direct you. NOT being in control means chaos. It means helplessness. It means inability to make decisions. Or to take initiatives. It means you are the one that follows. And if that is what you actually desire you have to be conscious of that choice. Otherwise you fall into that role and then wonder why nothing goes as you want. And if you choose to follow, choose your leader wisely. There always is someone in control, someone in charge, someone that leads. There is always a power dynamic. Truth is, we feel safe with those in control. Especially when they show us that them being in that role is positive for us. But so many people trust others more than they trust themselves! Which means being constantly influenced by everyone else's option and advice... which makes then the ones in control of your life! Decide WHO you want to take control when you want or need it, but also choose when YOU should be The One in charge. Developing that self-trust requires radical self responsibility. Which is what people struggle with. Nobody wants to be responsible for anything. And then we blame everyone for why our lives are not what we want them to be. And if you DO want to dominate, start by controling your own Self, your own thoughts, your own life. You can't expect others to trust YOU if YOU don't. Think about it... those that are in control are the people that have the most influence in the world. So if conscious people who desire to create a positive change take more control/responsibility, it would literally change society as we know it.

Rick Rubin: "Make what you love, not what you think people will like" "If you want to live in a creative way, which will benefit everything in your life, be a better person in your family, do a better job starting a new business, it's all the same. I don't really know anything about music. It's more a way of looking at the world and wanting it to be the best it could possibly be. And doing whatever it takes to be the best it could possibly be." Rubin shares how his career happened: "From the beginning, I never thought any of the things I'm doing were possible or realistic. I just did things out of the love of them, thinking I would have real jobs. That my passion would be my hobby, and I'd have a job to support my hobby. And it just magically turned out different than that without me knowing it was possible." On why some things connect and others don't: "The stars line up at certain times for certain things to happen. Sometimes you can make something great, and it doesn't connect for whatever reason. Sometimes you make two things you think are the two best things you've ever made. One of them connects with the world. One of them doesn't. And it might not have anything to do with what's in the art. It might be that it came out the same day as something else. Or there was a bigger story at the time. There's so much to it that we don't understand." He continues: "All we can do is make something good and put it out and hope for the best. That's all there is. We never know why things work. Peter Thiel on $NVDA (about a year ago): It is probably quite tricky. If you had to concretize it, one thing that is very strange is if you just follow the money, at this point 80 to 85% of the money in AI is being made by one company, it is NVIDIA. It is all on this very weird hardware layer, which Silicon Valley does not even know very much about anymore. We do not really do hardware, we do not do silicon chips in Silicon Valley anymore. I get pitched on these companies once every three or four years, and it is always, I have no clue how to do this, it sounds like a pretty good idea, but man, I have no clue, and we never invest. There is this theory that the hardware piece makes the money initially, then gets more commodified over time, and it will shift to software. And the, I do not know, multi trillion dollar question is whether that is going to be true again this time, or whether NVIDIA will have this incredible monopoly. I suspect NVIDIA will. I think it will maintain its position for a while. I think the game theory on it is something like this. All the big tech companies are going to start trying to design their own AI chips so they do not have to pay the 10x markup to NVIDIA. How hard is it for them to do it? How long will it take? If they all do it, then the chips become a commodity and nobody makes money in chips. So do you go into hardware? You should do it if nobody else is doing it. If everybody does it, you should not do it. I am not sure how that nets out, but probably people stay stuck for a while and NVIDIA goes from strength to strength for a while.
