Most people will prob know it from things like this scene or cartoons depicting jazz fans/ musicians in the 1930s and 40s.

Surprised the reactions to this are "Talking Heads" and "early 2000 NBA draft." The reference is zoot suits, which were oversized suits worn by young Black, Mexican, and Asian Americans in the 1930s and 40s, often part of the jazz scene. Think: Cab Calloway and Malcolm X.

The wearers obvs know the outfits look out of place today. Just saying that the zoot suit is an important part of American history, even outside of menswear. The style eventually led to the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots, where Chicanos—some children—were beaten because of their clothes.
