Basketball is played WITH the basketball 5% of the time. One of my favorites quotes from Billy Donovan is: ‘The other 95% of the time most players spend trying to get the basketball’. Players also can’t conceptualize the amount of time they have the ball in their hands in a game. They think it’s exponentially more than it actually is. I sat down with rising star West Virginia defensive coordinator Zac Alley. We talked about his defensive philosophy, the culture he’s building on that side of the ball, and what he looks for when recruiting players to West Virginia. This World Cup has shown how Argentinian players are just built different, and it was interesting because, in the press conferences, both managers addressed this. First, Tuchel talks about the Argentinian value of the ball and how they protect the ball at all costs, how they manage those small spaces, and how they learn this from a young age. He references culture, and this is exactly it. A child playing in a certain environment leads to that. Not every Argentinian child is on the national team, but it raises the ceiling. It creates a certain type of style and a certain type of player. Then Scaloni also references his culture. He sees them play without fear of losing. It comes from playing in an environment where you are constantly faced with the potential of losing and being able to play with that pressure, right? They don’t fight against it. They play with it. They use it. And I think this is where youth football coaches should really take note. This does not mean we should copy and paste Argentinian culture into every training environment, because culture cannot just be copied. But the values within that culture can be inculcated in every training environment. The value of the ball. The courage to receive it in small spaces. The ability to protect it under pressure. The confidence to keep playing after a mistake. The willingness to play with the possibility of losing rather than constantly trying to avoid it. Those values can become part of the environment we create every day. They can be present in the games we design, in what we praise, in what we allow players to struggle with, and in how we respond when they lose the ball. If every mistake leads to the coach stopping the session, giving the answer, or taking the pressure away, then players never learn to play with that pressure. They learn to wait for the coach. It was cool to see how two managers, at such a big stage, reference culture and the environments that kids play in when they’re young. Because the players we see on the biggest stage were not only created by tactics or coaching information. They were created by environments that taught them what to value, how to relate to the ball, and how to play when there was something to lose.

SIMPLE CUES ON DEFENSE It’s so funny, these are cues that I use with the young players that I coach and develop. So they are meant to be simple. There will be players/coaches/trainers/parents at higher levels that look at this video and think it’s dumb, or too basic. Yet when I watch bad defensive players/teams at the Pro/College/HS level … they can’t keep players in front, are late in rotations, and don’t finish possessions with rebounds. So idk, maybe this is just for youth players, or maybe it’s for everyone 🤷‍♂️

(Chris Cenac ’25, Arafan Diane ’26) “They chose here, we don’t recruit a lot of guys. Most people don’t know about our recruiting and that’s the way I prefer it. We kinda work behind the scenes… Recruiting never stops with us, but you know the winningest program in America the last eight years is Houston. It’s because of our recruiting — we have good players. Coaches win a lot of games because they have good players, we have good players and will continue to get good players.”

Coaching from the stands is disrespectful to … Your kid!! The best players can figure out solutions on their own, they don’t need help from the stands. Each game is an opportunity for players to learn how to do that. Yes, they will fail, but they will learn. And ultimately they will be a better player because of it. Shouting instructions from the stands only shows that you don’t believe they have the ability to make adjustments, and you aren’t good with failing so they can grow.

If you’re not already fired up for tomorrow, listen to this. I’m fuming. Listen to what these ex-players and pundits think about our chances. Listen to what they think about our fanbase. Listen to what they say our reaction will be if we go 1–0 down. Literally sniggering at us. They seem to think our players are going to hate playing in that stadium tomorrow and that we will make it toxic. Honestly, after hearing that, I’ve never been more determined to show everyone exactly who we are. We are the Tottenham, And we are the best, We are the Tottenham, So fuck all the rest.
