The research team at Web3 Foundation built ELVES so that a random subset of validators can verify each block, rather than the full set, unless needed. Each validator does less work, but the network as a whole does more. Smaller validation surface. More throughput per set. Same security. Higher throughput. The result is a system that scales without asking every validator to carry the full load.

Let's address the DDoS concern regarding Cardano's Linear Leios upgrade. There is a concern that if the network is forced to discard endorsement blocks, it could waste SPO resources and act as a denial of service vector. It’s a valid point, but the architecture accounts for this. When a block is dropped, the actual transaction validation work isn't lost, it simply carries over to the next one.
