I sat down with NVIDIA Sam Stanwyck (Sam Stanwyck) at ISC to talk about one of the most misunderstood areas in computing: quantum. We discussed why NVIDIA is not building a quantum computer, but instead the infrastructure around it: GPUs, AI, CUDA-Q, quantum simulation, control systems, error correction, and the path toward hybrid CPU/GPU/QPU supercomputing. The key takeaway: Quantum will likely not arrive as a standalone magic machine. It will arrive as part of a much larger accelerated computing stack, combining classical supercomputers, AI, GPUs, and quantum processors to tackle problems in chemistry, materials science, energy, optimization, and fundamental science. IIT Madras professor S. Lakshmi Bala walks a full quantum mechanics class through the two-level atom, and she does it for free. Western physics departments charge over $2,000 per credit for a graduate course in quantum mechanics. This entire course has been free since the early 2000s, but someone is trying to hide it. In this lecture she has already moved past abstract vector spaces into a real physical system, the same two-level atom model that shows up later in laser physics and quantum computing. No login wall. No certificate fee to just watch. One professor, one blackboard, one camera that never stopped rolling for over 40 lectures. Physics departments built million dollar tuition systems around gatekeeping exactly this material. The U.S. Department of Commerce Department recently awarded PsiQuantum $100M to accelerate development of BTO, giving a rare look into the underlying manufacturing stack required to scale fault-tolerant quantum computing. We profiled PsiQuantum last September following its $1B Series E, including how the company produces the world’s highest-performing optical switch - a core component of its silicon photonics platform. PsiQuantum is currently the only company or institution in the world manufacturing this BTO material for optical switches at 300mm scale. While the company built this silicon photonics platform for fault-tolerant quantum computing (FTQC)*, the implications may extend far beyond quantum itself. As AI data centers increasingly shift from copper to optical networking, PsiQuantum’s photonics stack could also become foundational infrastructure for next-generation AI systems. *Fault-tolerant quantum computing (FTQC) refers to quantum computers that can continue operating accurately even when individual quantum bits (“qubits”) are noisy or error-prone. Quantum computing sounds scary when you hear “it could break crypto” but that’s not where we are today! Binance CSO Jimmy Su put it pretty simply. current quantum computers aren’t even close to cracking the cryptography protecting bitcoin, ethereum and other major networks. no reason to panic rn the part actually worth watching is what happens before quantum gets there post-quantum crypto already exists. NIST finalized its first standards for it in 2024. the hard part is getting the whole ecosystem to adopt it. chains, wallets, exchanges, custodians, millions of users. that’s years, not a switch flip exchanges are already in on this. binance for one has been tracking quantum developments, evaluating post-quantum security standards and preparing its infrastructure for the eventual migration. still an ecosystem problem tho. no exchange can become fully quantum-safe on its own if the chains and wallets around it aren’t ready too. meanwhile, the real risks are way less sci-fi phishing, malware, social engineering, compromised credentials, sloppy wallet security that’s what users actually need to worry about today, not quantum computers worth prepping for early. not worth panicking over yet 🧠
