If caught in a rip current NEVER TRY TO SWIM DIRECTLY BACK TO SHORE. you swim parallel to the shore with a slightly inward angle until you reach the shore. It is a very dangerous situation and even good swimmers can and will tire out. I have been in 2 in my life. Once as a child and once as an adult from just simply not paying attention to the signs. I grew up near the ocean though and was taught at a young age what to do in these scenarios and was able to get out both times without assistance. If you look at the water patterns you will notice a consistent strip of water amongst the waves that is calmer looking.ay only have a small wave here and there compared to the surrounding (which is why people go towards it because it looks easier) and occasionally may have the white "foam/bubble" area in a strip going straight out to deeper areas. Always respect the ocean and NEVER turn your back to it while in the water.
