Nobody says the plant is destructive or inherently bad. Instead what is said about it is it grows so fast it can making river travel impossible and suck so much water out of the lakes and rivers as it grows it affects water availability and if allowed to grow completely cover the surface and critically lower oxygen levels of the water below. Now what he said was true. If strictly controlled it's a useful plant. In China it's also eaten as a vegitable though growing it in polluted water limits its use as a food as it absorbs toxinx in the water. The problem is it grows so fast that short an army whose sole purpose is to keep it under control it would quickly overrun open water throughout the southern USA. In many ways it's similar to kudzu the land vine. It too if controlled is useful in a variety of ways, but it grows so fast so much effort would have to be put into controlling it that profiting from it is next to impossible. Of course that begs the question why don't we find a way to make it profitable to use it.

So basically anything that the government tells you you should kill it's a good idea to do the research and find out how it helps the government when you kill that plant?

Kind of a weird title because it does start off stating it is an invasive species so it’s not exactly just letting mother nature do what it’s doing it is manipulating it. However I do see a lot of promise with research like this but I have seen a lot of destruction as well fair warning. Many times we’ve had invasive species brought into a region just to highly regret it later as unforeseen problems came about (kind of like how this dude said once you kill the plant it actually needs more of its own plant to clean the water) if the plant would never have been there originally it would never have been sprayed and the water would not need to be filtered the same hypothetically but I could see where you encounter and say it could clean all different water and we should be using natural filter feeders everywhere but like I said you never know the unforeseen consequences of bringing another species into an ecosystem. When we used to camp in the desert and searched for natural water springs to camp next to, we’d dig a little to let the water come through. If there was any sediment, we’d just add a couple of pieces of gravel to help it settle and clear up so we can drink, cook and wash with it. Ps: we find the underwater springs by using an egg.
