I lived in Vancouver, WA when this happened on May 18, 1980… everyone watched it erupt all day. Unreal.

I lived in Iowa at the time of the eruption, and there was a fine layer of reddish dust on my car. Sunsets were beautiful there for a bit.

And after the explosion a gorge was left. Geologists have said (paraphrase) "if we hadn't seen this happen, we would've said the gorge was millions of years old"
