I remember when that happened… Just seemed unbelievable at the time. Living in the Southeast and being 16… volcanic eruptions happening in lower 48 was not on my radar at all.

I lived in Iowa at the time of the eruption, and there was a fine layer of reddish dust on my car. Sunsets were beautiful there for a bit.

And after the explosion a gorge was left. Geologists have said (paraphrase) "if we hadn't seen this happen, we would've said the gorge was millions of years old"
