Fibroids are tumors that grow on or in the wall of the uterus, and about 70% to 80% of women will have them in their lifetime. Black women suffer the most. But fibroids are widely misunderstood and poorly researched. Federal research about fibroids receives far less money compared to other conditions like prostate or breast cancer. Let’s give a cheer for this little guy who has reached an important milestone: the development of object permanence. Attributed to Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget, the object permanence is just what its name implies - an understanding that objects continue to exist even when out of sight. And while that may sound pretty obvious to us as adults, it’s actually a concept infants develop over time. Piaget theorized - and demonstrated through experimentation that - prior to its development (around 8 months of age) - infants behave as if objects removed from their sight simply cease to exist. As a reflection of their working memory, the bottom line for babies seems to be “out of sight, out of mind.” (In studies, younger babies do not search for a toy covered by a blanket, for example.) But you can tell that’s not the case for this little guy. Watch what happens when the plastic lid becomes inadvertently balanced on the top of his head. Our hero is clearly puzzled by its disappearance. He knows it still exists and begins searching the surrounding area to figure out where it might have gone. In the years since Piaget’s original research, newer studies have called aspects of his theory into question - suggesting infants may develop the concept earlier than originally theorized. Do babies develop accents even before they can speak conventionally? The short answer is yes… and these linguistic markers begin even sooner than you might think. So many of you tagged me in this video yesterday featuring an infant that babbles with the same Scouse accent as his mother. Other than “no” he doesn’t speak a single conventional word, but listen to how the rhythm and intonation of his vocalizations mirror those to which he is exposed daily. As hearing becomes functional during the third trimester, infants are exposed to the distinct patterns of their mothers’ native language - with studies suggesting newborns can already distinguish (and prefer) what will become their native tongue only hours after birth. Incredibly this learning doesn’t wait until the babbling stage to evidence itself. Research suggests that even the cries of newborns reflect this preference. That’s right: babies cry with an accent. One major study on the topic showed that French babies cry with a rising intonation, while German infants favor a falling melody - both reflecting the patterns of their native languages. We’re only just beginning to understand the deep learning that begins in utero. It’s just more evidence that the period from prenatal to three is the most critical window in all of human development. Three 16 year old Indian students can remove microplastics from water using tamarind seeds. And they've received a $12,500 grant from The Earth Prize to develop this solution. How did they do it? Tamarind seeds have something called polysaccharide - which is a sticky compound that can natural polymer. Kinda like a plant-based glue. This glue when mixed with water can pull out microplastics and clump them together. And these kids are using the same principle to develop their product called "Plas-Stick" - which is just this power made from waste tamarind seeds. Now, "Plas-Stick" is still in its developmental stage and there is a lot that needs to be done before it can be scaled. But if they pull this off - we could have a simple, biodegradable and scalable solution to purify water for billions of people in the world. And that's something. Q: How much should you assist your toddler? A: Only as much as they need to avoid frustration and find success. After 8-12 months of near total dependence, toddlers unlock a whole new world in which they have the language, cognition, and motor skills to begin acting on their own desires. We call this agency. And while it can be a real shift for us as parents (after becoming accustomed to meeting infants’ every need), it’s important to honor your toddlers’ growing independence and allow them the time and space to develop skills of their own. I’m such a fan of this independent little one, who is not only determined to free herself from her car seat - but supremely confident in her ability to do so. Of course toddlers need plenty of adult supervision - to avoid not only physical danger but the very real frustration that comes along with the misalignment of their desires and abilities. But toddlerhood is also a time to begin following your little one’s lead, allowing them the opportunity to work through challenges and, yes, occasionally “worrying about yourself” (as our hero so aptly puts it). Q: How much should you assist your toddler? A: Only as much as they need to avoid frustration and find success. After 8-12 months of near total dependence, toddlers unlock a whole new world in which they have the language, cognition, and motor skills to begin acting on their own desires. We call this agency. And while it can be a real shift for us as parents (after becoming accustomed to meeting infants’ every need), it’s important to honor your toddlers’ growing independence and allow them the time and space to develop skills of their own. I’m such a fan of this independent little one, who is not only determined to free herself from her car seat - but supremely confident in her ability to do so. Of course toddlers need plenty of adult supervision - to avoid not only physical danger but the very real frustration that comes along with the misalignment of their desires and abilities. But toddlerhood is also a time to begin following your little one’s lead, allowing them the opportunity to work through challenges and, yes, occasionally “worrying about yourself” (as our hero so aptly puts it).
