Much has been written about the fate of LIV Golf over the last few weeks. But with the investment they’ve made in the Asian Tour, another big question is what the future holds for them. Flushing It Golf spoke with executives at LIV Golf Andalucia about their plans, and they are committed to utilising The International Series on the Asian Tour to help elevate national opens across the globe as LIV Golf 2.0 develops. In fact, several senior players even mentioned, unprompted, the importance of building it within the potential 2027 schedule. However, members on the Asian Tour admit although they are very happy with the success of the partnership so far, there were concerns when the LIV Golf backed purse increase of the Kolon Korean Open was pulled at the last minute, and they want options left open amid the uncertainty. Flushing It Golf reached out to the Asian Tour and they offered this official comment: “LIV Golf have been a terrific partner for the Asian Tour over the past five years – facilitating the creation of The International Series, which has been hugely successful. These premium events have added a new dimension to our tour, boasting world-class fields competing for elevated prizemoney at outstanding venues. In particular, the initiative has afforded us the opportunity to travel to exciting new markets in Africa, the Middle East and Europe. We look forward to seeing the remainder of The International Series events played out on the Asian Tour this season. “Our senior leadership are in constant dialogue with stakeholders and partners on how best to move forward and build on the successes over the past five years. We are very confident that solutions will be found that are in the best interests of our members and partners. They will pave the way for a strong schedule to be in place for 2027 and ensure long-term growth. “We look forward to providing updates over the next few months and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we navigate through to the next cycle.” The International Series are fantastic tournaments and have without question helped offer more opportunities for golf in the Asian Tour region. Several players, like Scott Vincent from Zimbabwe, have completely changed their life by qualifying for the LIV Golf League. And fans all across the globe have been able to see star players in the flesh. If LIV Golf is to succeed going forward, they desperately need authentic pathway systems to create and elevate their own stars. They simply cannot afford to buy them in anymore. The Asian Tour offers that, but LIV Golf are not the only tour interested in strengthening links with the region. In fact, Flushing It Golf understands the PGA Tour attempted to form a much closer relationship with the Asian Tour several years ago, with an offer made to create a formal partnership, but that was rejected by the board. A few years later, the Asian Tour then partnered with LIV Golf in a deal worth $300 million. It’s entirely possible though that the PGA Tour, along with the DP World Tour, will sense weakness and now look to make another approach to grow their global pathway system. This leaves the Asian Tour in a position where they have multiple options available. No matter what happens to their partnership with LIV Golf, the Asian Tour will be just fine. LIV Golf have sold nearly 100,000 tickets for their first ever event in South Africa, putting it on track to comfortably be the best attended golf event ever held in the country. Charl Schwartzel spoke about the growth of LIV Golf since their inaugural event in 2022: “Yeah, I mean, that first event in June in 2022, there was a lot of turmoil in our sport, a lot of uncertainty. Obviously it was coming from guys that had come to LIV. Nobody was sure what to expect… “But from a LIV standpoint, it's been fantastic to be part of it, to see how it's grown, gotten better. Every year they improve. “We've had a taste of it every year in Adelaide, where you can see what it can be, because that's like the pinnacle of the LIV events. Now just to see what we've created here in South Africa, it makes you very proud to see. This is fantastic. “I don't think there's any -- there's never been a golfing event in South Africa that's ever been set up like this, and I don't think many sporting events here. This is really amazing, and it's sort of a great -- to have seen, and like I said, proud to be a part of it, that's what we thought and what we were told it could be when we signed up with LIV, and it's really come to life. It's amazing.” LIV Golf Adelaide is currently the premier event on the league attracting 77,000 fans in 2023 for the first playing and 115,000 this year. Anthony Kim talks about how it feels being on a team for the first time on the LIV Golf League: “I'm just one day in, but obviously I wouldn't have accepted to be on the team if I didn't like all three of the guys. I've gotten to play with Thomas now quite a bit, and just being around guys that I want to hang out with off the golf course is the reason I chose to be on a team because obviously I had an option to stay wild card. “But honored to be a part of the team, and I think as I get better, the team will have more chances to win.” He then spoke about his expectations and goals for the season: “I'm delusional enough that my expectations were the same today as they were two years ago. But now I'm actually able to produce some of the good shots. “I've been working hard, and it's nice to see rounds like today where they could have been much lower, but it was still solid and on a tricky day. “I think I have a lot of opportunity in front of me, and if I just keep working, I don't see why I can't be contending on Sundays. “My goals are the same as they were when I first joined LIV. Bryson DeChambeau says LIV Golf have had a “fantastic” start to the season and it means so much to be part of the team. Speaking after his dramatic victory in Singapore, Bryson said: “I think it's been a fantastic start for LIV Golf, and what the 4Aces are doing is incredible. Anthony Kim spoke about his journey after a third round 68 to be solo 3rd at LIV Golf Adelaide: “It's been a hell of a week. Obviously not having a visa to get into this country was the start. I've worked hard, and I knew this day would come at some point. Obviously Bryson is at 20-something under or whatever he is, and he's got a huge lead, but I'm at least putting myself where I feel like I belong, and the practice is paying off.” He then spoke about whether he believed he’d be in this position when he joined the league 2 years ago: “It was always the goal to be in the final group, giving yourself a chance to win a golf tournament, or else I wouldn't have been practicing and playing on this league. But if you'd have asked me three years ago, I would have told you you were on drugs.” Then he was asked about breaking through: “I don't care if it's tough, if it's easy. I just want to break through and give myself a chance to win the golf tournament. Obviously six shots back, seven shots back going into tomorrow is going to be tough. But I know if I just keep working that I'll have enough chances. “I like playing tough golf courses because I'm always looking to battle uphill. I know that a large percentage of the players at majors already feel like they can't win the golf tournament. NCAA Champion Michael La Sasso is now the youngest player on LIV Golf after signing for Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers GC during the off season. He explained his decision to join the league ahead of the season opener in Riyadh: “One of the things that went into my decision, when I was 10 years old starting to play golf, like, the goal for me was to play professional golf. Having people that have been very well-known in the golf space and are so experienced, and to be able to be a part of a team that's with Phil, somebody that's had so much experience, I feel like he'll be able to answer any question that I throw at him, to have the ability to be able to ask somebody that on a daily basis, that played a very big part in it for me because not every 21-year-old has the opportunity to be able to ask questions to those people. So that was a big factor for me. “I think so far, I'm so grateful that I made the decision, and I am very happy to be here.” Michael also says that Caleb Surratt, who joined Jon Rahm’s LIV Golf team for the 2024 season, had an impact on his decision too: “So, I've had a very good relationship with Caleb Surratt. Not many people know this, but he was committed to NC State at the same time I was. He's from North Carolina, I'm from North Carolina. Growing up, I played a lot of golf with him, and we were very close. “I remember when he first came here, he stayed at my house because he was getting a swing lesson from -- we go to the same instructor. Everything that he had to say, it made me excited. From a very early start, hearing about LIV and every perk that it had and hearing him talk so highly about it, the fact that I actually had an opportunity to come out here and play, and I asked him a bunch of questions and kind of from the start, everything that he had to say and people that I talked to, everything was so, so good.” He went on to say about the prospect of playing team golf: “I think that makes the transition a little bit easier. I feel like my golf has kind of taken off when I've been in a team environment. For me, having a team around me was very appealing. “I've played good golf as a team. I like the camaraderie, kind of the friendly banter that goes back and forth between the guys. For me to have the opportunity to come play on a team environment for a professional career, I think that's the coolest thing ever.” This is Michael’s rookie season as a pro after signing for HyFlyers GC straight out of college. Normally, it’s a difficult transition for young players to make, but Michael isn’t short of confidence and has some lofty goals: “I've talked with a bunch of people on the team. I know Phil is very big on having a team win and an individual win. Now being the youngest player in the league, I'd kind of like to come in and make a good noise, and I would like to win a couple times. I would like to see the team win for sure, as a team event. I think that would be pretty neat, as well, and kind of take it one day at a time.” One thing is very clear from this interview, whatever happens during Michael’s pro debut this week, it will not be boring! NCAA Champion Michael La Sasso is now the youngest player on LIV Golf after signing for Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers GC during the off season. He explained his decision to join the league ahead of the season opener in Riyadh: “One of the things that went into my decision, when I was 10 years old starting to play golf, like, the goal for me was to play professional golf. Having people that have been very well-known in the golf space and are so experienced, and to be able to be a part of a team that's with Phil, somebody that's had so much experience, I feel like he'll be able to answer any question that I throw at him, to have the ability to be able to ask somebody that on a daily basis, that played a very big part in it for me because not every 21-year-old has the opportunity to be able to ask questions to those people. So that was a big factor for me. “I think so far, I'm so grateful that I made the decision, and I am very happy to be here.” Michael also says that Caleb Surratt, who joined Jon Rahm’s LIV Golf team for the 2024 season, had an impact on his decision too: “So, I've had a very good relationship with Caleb Surratt. Not many people know this, but he was committed to NC State at the same time I was. He's from North Carolina, I'm from North Carolina. LIV Golf’s early proposed schedule for 2027 consists of what they are calling “5 x Team Majors” and “5 x Signature Events” in correspondence with media. The players obviously got the same memo because Anthony Kim made a joke about it ahead of LIV Golf Korea. When asked about whether majors are on his radar, AK said: “Yeah, I obviously want to play in the majors. I want to play in the biggest events. That's why I'm working. But I heard LIV is adding five more majors, so there will be nine majors to go after. (Smiling.)” On the serious side though, AK is currently 5th on the season long standings and the highest placed player who is not currently exempt after Andalucia will qualify for The Open.
