The ice crystal acts like glass prism , refracting the light rays emitted by the sun ☀️.

Sun dogs occur when sunlight refracts (bends) through tiny hexagonal ice crystals suspended in high-altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds, or in very cold, diamond-dust-filled air near the ground (common in winter or polar/frigid regions). The ice crystals act like prisms, creating bright mock suns (parhelia) typically 22° to the left and right of the real Sun, often with a partial halo connecting them. Under perfect conditions (very uniform crystal orientation), more spots or complex patterns can appear, giving the impression of 3, 4, 5, or even 7 “suns.”

The explanation is very understandable but I am curious why it's not a usual occurrence? The ice and the sun are always available, I have not heard or seen this in the past 50 years until it happened Jos.
