This device is used in Gene Wolfe's "Book of The New Sun", superlative late 70s sci fi/mystical fiction. There's a hidden palace within the Autarch's palace. Severian, the protagonist, looking for a specific room only finds it when he falls into what he thinks is a picture of it.
