My Peshawar — The Winter Capital of Afghanistan 🇦🇫 Peshawar and Afghanistan – Historical Facts 1. Part of Historic Afghanistan Peshawar lies in the ancient region of Gandhara, which was historically connected to Ariana / Khorasan, areas that are widely regarded as the historical geography of Afghanistan. For centuries, Peshawar was ruled by Afghan dynasties. 2. Capital during the Durrani Empire (18th century) Ahmad Shah Durrani, the founder of modern Afghanistan (1747), included Peshawar within Afghan territory. During the reign of Timur Shah Durrani, Peshawar became the winter capital of Afghanistan, while Kabul served as the summer capital. This makes Peshawar one of the official capitals of Afghanistan during the Durrani period. 3. Barakzai Period Under Dost Mohammad Khan and other Barakzai rulers, Peshawar remained under Afghan control. It was an important political, military, and economic center of eastern Afghanistan. 4. Loss of Peshawar Between 1818 and 1834, the Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh invaded Afghan territories and captured Peshawar by force. Later, the British took control of the region. In 1893, the Durand Line, imposed by British India, formally separated Peshawar from Afghanistan.
