my brain will never be able to process how this translates into sound, no matter how many times I read how it's done. it's fascinating as hell.

I can understand making the vibrations just fine, but the different tones/instruments/fine sounds, it's nuts.

The needle follows the records track and wiggles up/down. The wiggles are translated via magnets into an electrical signal that runs through several stages of amplification until its audible. Get close and you can just barely hear the music from the needle itself

The grooves in the disc makes a needle vibrate. A microphone right next you the needle picks up the sound and then an amplifier and speakers increase the volume

These vibrations are transmitted to: The Cartridge: This is where mechanical vibrations are converted into electrical signals. Inside the cartridge, there's a small magnet and coil system. Amplification: The electrical signal from the cartridge is very weak, so it needs to be amplified. One of the most mind blowing experiences I remember having as a kid was when I decided, out of curiosity, to put the needle and turn the disc by hand with the machine turned off, and I could still hear the song, at a very low volume, but I could clearly hear it.

Anyone else disappointed the record wasn’t the song they were playing?
