My friend has this extra fitting on his steering wheel, which helps him make U-turns very conveniently. What do you think about it?

If you are aware of the bra you wear right now you are wearing the wrong one

This is a very old thing (I saw it first around 30 years ago) but it's not great because they have a chance to break or get stuck at the wrong moment.

Unnecessary addition. Nothing can replace hands on steering wheel for grip and control

Hazard in a collision. Especially if the driver is not belted.

The newer cars come with a self-centered steering wheel, that are more comfortable & convenient. This might be okay for older cars.

Cars with no power steering would benefit from it. The modern cars might make it disastrous due to the precision power steerings and slight touch would alter the whole course of the car in just a fraction of a second. I wouldn't recommend using them.

if this was an important addition, car companies would have given it already.

I think that in UK, if your both hands are not on steering wheel when turning or probably throughout driving then you don’t pass the license test. I may be wrong. Either way having that kind of accessory raises risk some way in my opinion. We need to respect the driving.

a gadget from the JDM scene in SE Asia. Typically installed along with Momo-Recaro or Sparko racing steering wheels - good for drag racing but not practical for sedate style cars or driving

Worst, your hand can very easily get stuck while maneuvering fast or sudden. It's ok for trucks and non power steering vehicles. Cars don't need it.

This is not good for avoiding mistakes post turning. As human brain fails to get the feedback of wheel position, in case speed is bit high, one is prone to commit mistake.

Too much reliance on this third party fitting can be hazardous. It was in trend in India when we didn’t have power steering.

Frankly, I don't see any use for it. I'd rather have my hands on the steering wheel. Also, in case it malfunctions will cause unnecessary strife.

seems worthy in narrow roads/ streets but definitely not for HIGHWAYS, naresh Garu

Don't mess with anything on steering, gas pedal and brakes

I have used it few times. As you said it's good for driving through narrow streets and taking turns. But on a normal speedy drives, doesn't give that grip. So better to use our two hands there.

It is indeed extremely convenient. I have a modern version of this fitted onto my steering wheel here in Europe. During annual checks , i must dismantle it since it's not allowed. Reason is collision safety.

Highly useful... Once you get used to this Knob, you will not like to handle any other vehicle without that facility!

In case of impact, the chances of this knob cracking the ribs of the driver are very high.
