He was told not to be in that room. He posted the hour anyway. The day before the speech, Bruce Pearl called Turning Point Auburn’s invitation “disappointing” and said the chapter was better than hosting James Fishback, over remarks Pearl attributed to him about Byron Donalds. That is a disinvitation campaign aimed at a public campus event, not a question. Fishback’s answer was the opposite of a closed door. He told Pearl to come and ask anything after the speech, and he named the standard Charlie Kirk actually used: engage the person you disagree with; do not censor him. Then he stood at the podium at Auburn and put the full speech up. A critic who will not walk into a room he is invited into has already spent his argument. The speech is on the record. The objection was that the speech should not happen. It happened in public, on a campus, with the door left open for the man who tried to shut it. That is the whole difference between a lecture and a ban.
