Although these players gave good contributions, I’m not sure we’ve seen any megastar win more with less in a 3-year span. 3 straight trips to the Finals out of the West. Back to back chips with a good but not elite roster. Kobe doesn’t get enough credit for doing what nobody thought he could do which was win without Shaq. And he did it back to back.

Kareem won 5 of 6 rings with Magic. The other one he won with Oscar Robertson, a Top 10-15 player all time Magic won all 5 of his rings with Kareem and 3 of them with Top 50 player James Worthy. Magic and Kareem are not penalized yet having won basically all their rings with Kareem who is noted by the media as a top 2-3 player all time, and magic as a top 4-5 player all time. How you win matters, what you do after losing matters. Creating a superteam in an already weak conference in your prime should always be a disqualification from GOAT discussions. Kobe didn't run after losing to the Celtics in 2008, he ran it back and got his revenge in 2010 vs Boston. He won back to back championships w/o Shaq, He won w/o a superteam and top75 teammates, he actually elevated his teammates and didn't make them change up their game. Paul Pierce acknowledges how great Pau was because they ran thru him in 2008 and but saw a major difference in his attitude and mentality in the 2010 Finals. LeBron James here is talking about how great the Celtics were with 4 All-Stars but he had to run to a Finals MVP and another top 5 member of his draft class to start winning rings. Kobe was the opposite and left free rings on the table with Shaq in order to cement his own legacy. This fact alone will never put LeBron above Kobe in the all-time standings.

One thing I’ve always admired about Kobe, after losing in 2008, he didn’t make excuses and he didn’t look for a shortcut. Celtics had 4 All Stars. Kobe could have forced the front office to add more All Stars, or run to south beach and create a super team. He didn’t, he knew what he had was enough and knew what it will take to win. Instead he said “Let’s run it back” Ariza isn’t just the only one. The biggest impact Kobe had was on Pau. Kobe toughened up Pau, showed him what it takes to win. It’s not just “Kobe Stans” who say this, the stars say it too. Just listen to Paul Pierce, he will tell you the same. Without Kobe, Pau would be just another skilled Big! And this is no disrespect towards Pau. He will tell you himself! He truly had the blueprint. He believed the work was the answer. He trained harder, challenged his teammates, and prepared them off the court just as much as on it. That’s real leadership. Not always nice, not always soft, but honest, demanding, and built to win. Kobe understood he couldn’t win alone, so he made sure the guys next to him were ready when it mattered. That’s Mamba Mentality. Discipline. Accountability. No excuses. Raise the standard. Be better today than you were yesterday. Again, KOBE STANS WOULDN’T BE KOBE STANS, IF KOBE WASN’T WHO KOBE WAS. We witnessed something special, and non of you can change that. Kobe lost to the Superteam Celtics, got advice from MJ and ran it back. Then Won back to back championships without a Top 75 teammate (which no one has ever done). Admitted LeBron is the GOAT Stan Van Gundy said “we wanted LeBron to score”. LeBron’s 38PPG was surely a feat against Orlando but he still was not the best player in the league. As the Magic still punished the Cavs and beat them in 6 and would have been 5 if not a great buzzer beater from LeBron. LeBron was also a -7 for the series. But when then Magic faced Kobe they were pretty much dominated because Kobe was the scoring engine and a threat all around the court. So the Magic could not just load up on the Lakers role players because Kobe’s action was putting so much pressure on them. They had to watch Kobe when he was around his spots in the mid-range and it often led to Pau Gasol having more one on ones in the post and even slashing and getting easy hand-offs from Kobe. Kobe averaged 32PPG with 7.4 assists and was a +49 for the series. It was total domination when he was on the court. He opened up everything and his action was way too much for the Magic. There was no defense for Kobe at this time in his career.
