'After Gandhi's dandi march, we'll have Gaadi march': Tehseen turns up heat on Gadkari, E20 Policy After the viral CJP protests at Jantar Mantar, political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla plans to turn up the heat on the Modi government with yet another protest against the e20 petrol policy. Tehseen has announced that his campaign against the E20 ethanol-blended petrol policy will be inspired y Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March. Called the Gaadi March, the protest will be held on July 31 at India Gate and proceed towards Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's office. He demands continuation of E10 fuel until vehicles phase out, a 20% discount on E20 fuel, lower prices for E0 fuel and greater transparency around the ethanol policy. The E20 rollout has followed a clearly communicated policy roadmap. Parliament replies, technical notifications, press conferences and public interviews have consistently explained the rationale and implementation framework. From April 1, RON 95 has been mandated as the minimum octane rating for E20 petrol. Since ethanol has an octane rating of around 108 RON, blending improves knock resistance and supports the requirements of modern engines. Concerns around mileage deserve informed discussion, but the policy direction, technical basis and rollout framework have remained transparent and publicly available.

The main characteristic of the fuel is still fossil based which is gasoline. The specifications are well structured in terms of its compliance to BIS standard IS 17021 published in 2018. Again, these standards are a result of a dialogue between various scientific agencies, experts and extensive testing. And all ethanol-based gasoline, E20 gasoline which is spread across the country now in all retail outlets, 77,000 plus of them across the country, have uniformly adopted the specifications, which is compliant to meeting the, emission standards for BS6 as well as several other specifications which regulate the engine performance in terms of higher RON, compliant sulfur and water content which is, compliant to meeting the requirement of engine performance.This is a summary of the few points of the E20 program of the Government of India, which is now made us less reliant on 100% import of crude towards production of gasoline. Even vehicles from before 2023 can run on E20 without any problem. As I mentioned, studies show a slight drop in mileage—around 4-5%. This does happen. The reason is that ethanol has lower energy content; hence, mileage decreases by about 4 to 5% with E20. In fact, performance actually improves because the vehicle's acceleration gets better. Ethanol has a significantly higher octane number. You might even be surprised to learn that pure ethanol is used in Formula 1 racing. So, you cannot say that performance suffers; in reality, performance—in terms of acceleration, torque, and so on—actually improves..."

Association President Sasanka Sekhar Sahu said many vehicles on Indian roads, including several BS6 models, were not originally designed for a 20% ethanol blend. He alleged that the fuel has led to complaints of clogged carburettors and other mechanical issues, with frustrated customers often confronting petrol pump owners despite dealers having no role in fuel policy.
